Calculate your life path number

What is the life path number?

Your life path number is the number drawn from your complete birth date. It does not speak of your character: it describes the ground you walk on, the situations that come back from one decade to the next, the lessons life places in your hands. It is held to be the main marker of a profile, for a simple reason: a date never changes, whereas a name can change.

The calculation takes three steps. First step: set up the addition of the day, the month, and the year, written as whole numbers. For a birth on November 18, 1976: 18 + 11 + 1976 = 2005. Second step: add the digits of the result, so 2 + 0 + 0 + 5 = 7. As long as the total has two digits, repeat. Third step: stop along the way if you land on 11, 22 or 33. These are the master numbers, kept as they are.

A check completes the operation: you also add the date digit by digit, so 1 + 8 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 7 + 6 = 34, then 3 + 4 = 7. The two routes always end up at the same final digit. The only possible difference: one may bring up a master number along the way that the other erases; the master number is then the one kept.

What sets the life path number apart from the other positions is its source. Expression, Soul Urge, and Personality come from the letters of the name: they describe a person, their talents, their wants, their way of doing things. The life path number comes from the calendar: it describes what life presents to that person. The two readings cross. When life path and Expression are in harmony, you have the feeling of being on the right ground; when they differ, circumstances push you to widen your palette. The personal year also starts from the birth date, but looks at only one year at a time, whereas the life path number covers the whole of existence.

How to calculate your life path number: an example

With Claire Martin, born March 14, 1987.

  1. Add the day, the month, and the year, then reduce

    14 + 3 + 1987 = 2004 → 2 + 0 + 0 + 4 = 6

  2. Redo the calculation digit by digit

    1 + 4 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 33

  3. Keep the master number if it appears

The second calculation lands on 33: life path number 33, also lived as a 6. Without 11, 22, or 33, both calculations give the same digit.

Which life path number is the rarest?

We calculated the life path number of every date of birth between 1950 and 2010 (22,280 dates), with the site’s method. The “pure” 2 is by far the rarest: most of the dates that lead to it go through 11, which is kept. The 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, and 9 share the rest almost equally.

Why other sites sometimes find a different number

Most often, the difference comes down to master numbers. Some calculators reduce everything to a single digit and show 2 where we keep 11. Others reduce each element of the date separately before adding them, which can make an 11 or a 22 appear or disappear. Still others ignore 33. None of these ways is absurd: they reflect different schools. Here, the reference is the French school, and more precisely “ABC de la numérologie” by Jean-Daniel Fermier (Grancher, 1984): addition of the whole date, digit-by-digit check, 11 and 22 kept, and 33 added, as many practitioners do today.

Common mistakes with the life path number

  1. Reducing day, month, and year separately, then adding those small digits: an 11 or a 22 can vanish along the way. Set up the addition of the whole date, then redo it digit by digit.

  2. Reducing 11, 22 or 33 to a single digit out of habit. These totals mark a stopping point: keep them.

  3. Counting November as 1 or December as 3 in the first addition. The month enters with its full number, 11 or 12.

  4. Changing a birth on February 29 to February 28 or March 1. The date on the birth record is what counts: 29 and 2, like any other day.

Frequently asked questions about the life path number

How do you calculate your life path number?

Just set up an addition with the three elements of the date, then reduce the total to a single digit by adding its digits. For June 3, 1990: 3 + 6 + 1990 = 1999, then 1 + 9 + 9 + 9 = 28, then 2 + 8 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1. The life path number is 1. If you land on 11, 22 or 33 along the way, you stop: it is a master number, which you keep. A birth on February 29 is calculated the same way, with 29 and 2.

What is the difference between life path and Expression numbers?

The life path number comes from the birth date, the Expression number comes from the letters of the name. The first describes circumstances, the kind of experiences that arise over the years. The second describes the person: their talents, their way of being in public. They are read together. Identical numbers or numbers in harmony give the feeling of being in the right place; distant numbers invite you to develop aptitudes that are not spontaneous.

Why is my life path 11 when another site finds 2?

Because that other site reduces all the way, without stopping on master numbers. 11 and 2 are not opposed: 11 is a more demanding form of 2, and many people with an 11 also recognize themselves in the description of 2. Another possible cause: the date can be added in two ways, by whole numbers or digit by digit. When an 11, a 22 or a 33 turns up by either route, we keep it.

Which is the rarest life path number?

The 2, by far. With this site’s method, which keeps a master number as soon as either of the two possible additions of the date reaches it, most dates that would lead to 2 stop at 11, and those that would lead to 4 often stop at 22: among births from 1950 to 2010, fewer than one date in a hundred gives a life path 2. Next come 6, 4, 22 and 33, at around 5 to 6% each. 11, for its part, is not rare at all. A path that is less frequent is not superior to the others for that: it simply has its own demands.

Does your life path number change over your lifetime?

No. It rests on the birth date, which never changes: the number you get therefore stays with you from one end of life to the other. Only the way of living it changes. At twenty, you often endure the situations it describes; later, you recognize them and know better what to do with them. The moving markers are elsewhere: the personal year turns every January 1, the personal month every month. If two calculators show two different paths, the difference comes from their method, not from a change.

Which life path numbers are compatible in love?

The harmony table followed here sorts the digits into two families. On one side 1, 3, 5, 6 and 9, which all get along; on the other 2, 4, 7 and 8, which complement each other in the same way. A path 11 is read as a 2; 22 is read as 4 and 33 as 6. These affinities show where understanding comes easily, not whom to love: two paths from different families simply have more to learn from each other, in daily life as in shared projects.

Vertical or horizontal method: which is right for the life path number?

Both, used together. The vertical method adds the three elements of the date written as whole numbers; the horizontal method lines up all the digits of the date and adds them one by one. They reach the same final digit, but not always through the same steps. For October 21, 1980, the vertical route gives 21 + 10 + 1980 = 2011, then 4; the horizontal route gives 2 + 1 + 1 + 0 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 0 = 22. Here, a master number found by either route is kept: this life path is 22, which is also lived as a 4.

Is the life path number the same as your life mission?

In most cases, yes: many numerologists and sites use “life mission” to mean the number drawn from the complete birth date. Tradition sees in it what existence invites you to accomplish. The term has no fixed definition from one author to another, though: always look at what is being added. On each life path page, a section reports what tradition associates with this mission, alongside the more concrete reading of circumstances that numerology offers.

Is the life path calculation reliable?

The calculation, yes: it is an addition, and the same day always gives the same number, with the same method. Its interpretation is another matter. No scientific study has established a link between a birth date and a character or a life course, and numerology cannot announce anything. It is read rather as a lens for reflection: a vocabulary for putting words on what you live. If a description does not speak to you, it commits you to nothing.
