Calculate your Expression number

What is the Expression number?

The Expression number sums up personality as it shows itself: the talents that come without effort, the way of entering a room, of speaking up, of introducing yourself to someone you meet. It is the number your circle recognizes most easily, because it describes what people perceive of you from the outside.

To get it, you convert into digits each letter of the first and last name received at birth. The value depends on the position in the alphabet: A, J and S count as 1; B, K and T as 2; C, L and U as 3; D, M and V as 4; E, N and W as 5; F, O and X as 6; G, P and Y as 7; H, Q and Z as 8; I and R as 9. Accents, hyphens, and apostrophes do not count: É is read as E, Ç as C.

Take Lucie Moreau. LUCIE gives 3 + 3 + 3 + 9 + 5 = 23. MOREAU gives 4 + 6 + 9 + 5 + 1 + 3 = 28. The total, 23 + 28 = 51, reduces to 5 + 1 = 6: Lucie’s Expression number is 6. As with the date, you stop at 11, 22 or 33 if the addition leads there.

The Expression number differs from the life path number in its source: the name, not the date. The path describes the road; Expression describes the person walking it, with their baggage. It also differs from the two other numbers of the name, which take only a part of it. The Soul Urge number reads the vowels, that is, what motivates in silence. The Personality number reads the consonants, that is, the concrete way of going about things. Expression gathers both: it forms the pivot of the personality. If you had to keep only two numbers from a profile, they would be this one and the life path number.

Other names. It is also called the Destiny number, or the name number. The same calculation with the first name alone gives the active number; with the surname alone, the hereditary number.

How to calculate your Expression number: an example

With Claire Martin, born March 14, 1987.

  1. Write the first given name and the birth surname

    CLAIRE MARTIN, without accents

  2. Give each letter its value

    C 3, L 3, A 1, I 9, R 9, E 5 · M 4, A 1, R 9, T 2, I 9, N 5 (chart below)

  3. Add everything, then reduce

    30 + 30 = 60 → 6 + 0 = 6

Why other sites sometimes find a different number

Most often, calculators do not start from the same letters. Some take the name in use or the married name; we keep the name recorded at birth. Some add up all the first names, like the English-language school; the main reading here takes only the first name, and the full reading takes them all. A few tools reduce each word before computing the total, which can erase a master number. The method followed here is that of the French school, as Fermier sets it out in “ABC de la numérologie.”

Common mistakes with the Expression number

  1. Calculating with the name worn day to day, a married name for example. The reference remains the surname on the birth record.

  2. Reducing the first and last name separately, then adding the two digits obtained: a master number can vanish. Add the two raw totals before reducing instead.

  3. Skipping part of a compound name or a particle. Le Gall is calculated on LEGALL, Jean-Pierre on JEANPIERRE.

  4. Giving accented letters a separate value. É counts as E, Ç as C, and Œ is worth two letters, O then E.

Frequently asked questions about the Expression number

Should you use your birth name or the name you go by?

The birth name. It is the basis of the Expression number, the Soul Urge number, the Personality number, and the chart, because it depends on no later choice. A name in use, a married name, or a pen name does not replace this foundation, but they can be studied separately: they describe the image you choose to give in a specific setting, at work for example.

Should you count all your first names?

It depends on the school. The French tradition, followed here for the main reading, keeps only the first of the first names on the civil record. The English-language school adds all the first names on the record. Both readings are offered: the full reading adds the following first names, which can change the Expression number and fill boxes in the chart. If people call you day to day by your second first name, the comparison is worth making.

How do you count a compound first name or an accented letter?

A compound first name counts in full: Jean-Pierre gives the letters JEANPIERRE, without the hyphen. Accents and the cedilla disappear, É is read as E and Ç as C. Ligatures are split: Œ counts as O then E. In names like D’Almeida or Le Gall, the apostrophe and the space are ignored, but all the letters are kept. These rules keep the same name from giving two results depending on how it is written.

Does the Expression number change after a marriage?

No. It is always calculated with the name received at birth, and a change of civil status does not affect it. The married name can still be studied separately, with the same letter table: its total describes how you present yourself in the setting tied to that name, family or professional. It is then read as a nuance that adds to the first, never as a replacement. The same reasoning applies to a stage name or a pen name.

What career should you choose based on your Expression number?

Expression is a good starting point, since it describes the talents that show up without effort. A 3 feels at ease where people speak, write, create; a 4 where people organize and build for the long term; an 8 where decisions must be made and resources managed. It points to a type of environment rather than a specific job. To refine, cross it with the life path number, which describes the ground, and with the Personality number, which describes how you work day to day.

Are the Expression number and the Destiny number the same thing?

Most often, yes. “Destiny number” is the English term for the addition of all the letters of the name, like Expression. Be careful, though: a few authors reserve the word destiny for the life path number, based on the date. To know what a site is talking about, look at its calculation: if it adds letters, it is Expression; if it adds the date, the life path number. Here, the word destiny is not used, to avoid any confusion.

Can the Expression number be a master number?

Yes. If the reduction of the sum of the letters ends at 11, 22 or 33, that number is kept. A total of 47 gives 4 + 7 = 11: Expression is 11, not 2. To avoid losing it, reduce the total of the full name in one go; reducing the first and last name each on its own, then adding them, can erase the master number. An 11 stays linked to 2, a 22 to 4 and a 33 to 6, whose talents it takes up in a more demanding form.

How do you calculate your Expression number?

Write your main first name followed by your birth surname in capitals and without accents, and give each letter its value from 1 to 9. Add the letters of the first name, those of the surname, then the two totals. For Hugo Lambert: HUGO gives 8 + 3 + 7 + 6 = 24, LAMBERT gives 3 + 1 + 4 + 2 + 5 + 9 + 2 = 26; 24 + 26 = 50, reduced to 5 + 0 = 5. His Expression number is 5. The calculator at the top of the page does the operation and shows the detail.

Can you calculate the Expression number of a company or a brand?

Yes, with the same letter table: you add all the letters of the chosen name before reducing the total; 11, 22 and 33 stay intact. The result is read as the image this name gives off: a 3 speaks of communication, a 4 of seriousness, an 8 of performance. It guarantees no commercial success; it mainly helps check that a name says what you want to say. A tool devoted to company and brand names is available on the site.
