Active number in numerology: calculation and meaning
The active number, also called the first name number, describes the person your family, friends, and neighbors know, away from any official role.

What is the active number?
The active number comes from just one part of your name: your first name. It is the word people use to call you to the table, on the phone, across the courtyard. Numerology reads in it the familiar person, the one your close circle knows when there is no badge to wear and no title to live up to.
It complements two other numbers drawn from letters. The Expression number combines all the letters, first name included: it describes the overall image, the one a coworker or a stranger also picks up. The hereditary number uses only the family name and speaks of what comes from your lineage. The active number sits in the space between the two: your personal ways, your reflexes in a couple, a shared apartment, a group of friends.
Within the report, it sheds light on a common gap. Many people recognize themselves more in their Expression number at work and in their active number on Sunday. An active 5 with an Expression 4 can keep an impeccable schedule at the office and improvise every weekend. That is not a contradiction: they are two different terrains.
The active number is at work at every age, since it goes with your first name from the first words addressed to you. It shows most in close ties: siblings in childhood, friendships and life as a couple later, grandchildren after that. It says nothing about your fate or your worth: it describes a way of inhabiting daily life, which each person shapes in their own way.
It should not be confused with the Personality number, which uses the consonants of the whole name, or with the initials number, which keeps only the first letters.
How to calculate it
Each letter of the first name on your birth certificate takes a digit from 1 to 9 according to its position in the alphabet, counted in series of nine (the table known as Pythagorean): the first letter gives 1, the tenth starts again at 1, and so does the nineteenth. You add the values, then reduce the total digit by digit until you reach 1 to 9, keeping 11, 22, and 33.
Accents disappear, and so does the hyphen in a compound first name. The full reading, offered as an option, adds the other first names on the birth certificate to the calculation. Elsewhere, people sometimes start from the name in daily use or a nickname; here, we stick to the first name received at birth.
Common mistakes with the active number
Starting from a nickname or the name you go by. The calculation uses the first name on the birth certificate: Alexandre comes to 3, whereas Alex would lead to 6.
Splitting Marie-Claire into two additions. A hyphenated first name forms a single word, and all its letters are counted together.
Reducing a master total out of habit. Lucas (11), Louis (22), and Victor (33) keep their master number as is.
Slipping the family name into the sum: the result then becomes the Expression number, which is a different notion.
Frequently asked questions: active number
Active number: usual first name or first name on the birth certificate?
Use the first name on the birth certificate, even if everyone calls you something else. Fermier starts from the name received at birth, which in his view carries the starting vibration. A nickname or everyday name can be calculated out of curiosity: it shows the nuance you give to your familiar persona, without replacing the base calculation.
How do you calculate the active number of a compound first name?
A compound first name joined by a hyphen on the birth certificate counts as a single first name: Marie-Claire becomes MARIECLAIRE, and all its letters go into the addition. If the two first names are separated by a comma or a space on the certificate, only the first is used for the main reading; the second comes into play only in the full reading.
What is the difference between the active number and the Expression number?
Only the first name goes into the active number, whereas the Expression number also totals the family name. The active number therefore describes the familiar person, the one at home and with friends; the Expression number describes the overall image, also seen in society and at work. When the two differ, people often behave differently at home and outside.
At what age is the active number felt?
From childhood, since it goes with the first name you hear every day, but it does not depend on any fixed period, unlike cycles or realizations. You notice it mostly where the relationship is familiar: games between siblings, shared housing during studies, life as a couple, visits from grandchildren. Over the years it does not fade; it tends to soften, because you learn to balance your reflexes with those you love.
Can the active number be a master number?
Yes: if the letters of the first name add up to a master number, the reduction stops there. Lucas gives 11 directly; Maxime gives 29, then 11; Nathan totals 22 and Victor 33. Each of these master numbers extends the 2, 4, or 6 by adding a demand to it. The page for that value presents both readings: it is common to recognize yourself first in the reduced number, then gradually notice what the master number adds.
Does the active number change if you change your first name?
No, the base calculation remains that of the first name registered at birth, even after an official change or after adopting another first name in daily life. The new first name can still be calculated separately: it shows the familiar image you have chosen, alongside the one received at the start. The comparison is often telling, for example when a rather reserved first name 7 gives way to an everyday first name 3, turned toward conversation.
What is the difference between the active number and the hereditary number?
The first is calculated on the first name, the second on the family name at birth. The active number describes your own ways, the ones noticed in a group of friends or in life as a couple; the hereditary number speaks of what circulates in the family: habits, priorities, a way of settling disagreements. An active 1 from a 6 lineage may thus want to decide alone where, in their family, decisions are made as a group. Both go into the calculation of the unique number.
Does the active number go by other names?
Yes. Many sites speak of the “first name number,” others of the “active digit,” and a few authors call it the “evolution number.” These names refer to the same operation: the reduced sum of the letters of the first name. Differences in results from one site to another come rather from the first name used: the everyday name for some, here the first name on the certificate, and all the first names on the certificate in the full reading.
How does the active number appear in the report?
It appears in the chapter “Who you are,” after the Expression number: the report sets it beside the hereditary number, then gives its letter-by-letter calculation and a text specific to its value. It is then used for the unique number, which adds the active number, the hereditary number, and the life path number. If its value comes back in several places in the profile, for example also in the Expression number or the life path number, the report points it out as a signature: a trait that repeats and therefore weighs more.
