What is the initials number?
Before we really know someone, we remember a few signs: a handshake, a way of introducing themselves, a signature at the bottom of a message. In numerology, initials play the role of a calling card. Each initial has its own reading, letter by letter; the initials number combines them into a single digit and describes the overall impression they create.
This number says nothing about your deeper motivations, which belong to the Soul Urge number, or about your talents, which the Expression number describes. It stays on the surface, and that is its whole value: it shows what others perceive during the first few minutes, before they know who you really are. A gap between this image and what you feel inside is common. It explains why you are sometimes given a role you did not choose: the one who organizes, the one people confide in, the one who decides.
The initials number is one of the markers of personality, alongside the active number and the hereditary number. It works at any age, but above all in first-contact situations: a first day at school, a new job, a neighborhood meeting, a date with someone you do not know. As you meet people, other numbers take over, and they discover what lies behind the calling card.
The pages devoted to each initial cover something else: here, we read the sum of the letters, not each one separately.
How to calculate it
Take the initial of the first name, then that of the family name, as it appears on the birth certificate. For a compound first name or surname, each part contributes its initial: Jean-Pierre Dupont has three, J, P, and D. Then replace each letter with its value (from 1 for A, J, and S up to 9 for I and R) and add them up.
Next, reduce the total digit by digit, stopping if you come across 11, 22, or 33 along the way. For Jean-Pierre Dupont: 1 + 7 + 4 = 12, then 1 + 2 = 3. Other methods keep only one initial per compound first name, add the middle names, or also reduce master numbers: the result may then differ.
Common mistakes with the initials number
Adding up all the letters of the name: that gives the Expression number. Here, only the first letters go into the sum.
Forgetting the second initial of a compound first name. Marie-Inès Roux has three, M, I, and R.
Reducing a master number out of habit. B (2) + I (9) = 11 for Bruno Imbert and M (4) + I (9) + R (9) = 22 for Marie-Inès Roux stay as they are.
Including middle names in the main reading: they only come into play in a full reading.
Frequently asked questions: initials number
How do you calculate your initials number?
Take the initial of your first name and the initial of your birth surname, adding the initial of each part if either one is compound. Convert each letter to a digit from 1 to 9 using the numerology chart, then add them up. Next, add the digits of the total as many times as needed, unless the result is 11, 22, or 33, three numbers the method keeps intact. Claire Martin, for example, gets C (3) + M (4) = 7.
Should you use your birth name or the name you go by for your initials?
The report starts from your birth name, which describes the underlying impression you have always made. The name you go by, after a marriage for example, can be calculated as a complement: it sheds light on the image you project in the settings where you use it, often at work. The two readings complement each other. Neither cancels the other, and it is common to recognize yourself a little in each.
What is the difference between the initials number and the Expression number?
The Expression number is calculated from all the letters of your full name: it describes your visible personality, your talents, and the way you act over the long term. The initials number keeps only the first letters: it is limited to the first impression, the image others receive before they know you. The two can differ sharply, which explains why we sometimes change our minds about someone after a few weeks.
Can the initials number be a master number?
Yes, but the number of letters decides what is possible. Two initials top out at 18, so only 11 can come up, as for Paul Vincent, P (7) + V (4) = 11. A 22 requires at least three initials, so a compound first name or surname, and a 33 requires at least four, since three letters never add up to more than 27. In every case the master number is kept, without losing sight of the single digit it reduces to.
What changes when you read the initials of all your first names?
It adds the initial of each middle name on the birth certificate. The parts of a compound first name already count in the main reading; the full reading goes further. A person named Jean, Paul, Henri Martin thus goes from J and M, which is 5, to J, P, H, and M: 20, then 2. The two results are read side by side, with the first remaining the reference for the report.
What is the difference between the initials number and the active number?
The active number adds all the letters of the first name and describes the person your close ones know. The initials, by contrast, are limited to the first letter of the first name and that of the surname: their sum concerns strangers, the image that forms before any familiarity. Hugo Roux has an active number 6 and an initials number 8: caring once you know him, he may first give an impression of confidence and firmness.
Does the initials number still matter once people know you well?
Less, without disappearing. It dominates the first exchanges, then gives way to the active number and the Expression number as the relationship settles in. It comes back to the foreground whenever you change settings: a move, a training course, speaking before a new audience. Your close ones no longer notice it; newcomers always meet it first.
Why is my initials number different on another site?
Three method choices explain most of the gaps. For Jean-Pierre, some sites keep only the J; others give letters their rank in the alphabet, 11 for K or 22 for V; still others reduce 11 and 22 to a single digit. Here, the J and the P both count, no letter exceeds 9, and master numbers stay whole.
What if my initials number doesn’t resemble my life path number?
This is common and nothing to worry about: the two do not measure the same thing. The life path number follows the thread of an entire life; the initials number, the image sent out at a first meeting. A path 7 with initials 3, for example, explains why people find you easy to talk to at a dinner, even though what you want most is quiet. The full report places this gap within the whole profile.
