Unique number: the 22 values in brief

What is the unique number?

The unique number is a notion this site takes from Jean-Daniel Fermier, the author whose method it follows. It does not describe a specific talent or a period of life. It tries to express, in a single value, the color that emerges when you place three things side by side: the everyday person, carried by the first name; what comes from the family, carried by the surname; and the road traced by the date of birth. It is read as a signature, valid at any age, rather than as a stage.

What sets it apart is its scale. Most numbers reduce to 1 through 9; this one climbs to 22. That ceiling matches the twenty-two major arcana of the Marseille tarot, from the Magician to the Fool. Each value borrows an easy-to-remember image from the card of the same rank: 9, the Hermit and his lantern; 19, the Sun. This is an illustration, not a spread: no card is turned over, and nothing is announced.

In a report, the unique number comes after the major numbers, as a synthesis. It does not replace the life path number or the Expression number; it links them. Two people with the same life path number can therefore end up with very different values, because their first names and surnames do not carry the same weight. From 10 to 22, reducing to a single digit adds a more discreet reading, in the background.

Beware of namesakes: several sites call “unique number” what is called the Maturity number here, obtained by adding the Expression number to the life path number. As for the “birth arcana,” often searched for, it is usually calculated from the date alone: a neighboring idea, a different calculation.

How to calculate it

Read: Unique number 12 →

We start from three numbers you already know: the active number (the letters of the first first name), the hereditary number (those of the surname at birth), and the life path number. Each is first reduced to between 1 and 9 (an 11 is then read as 2, a 22 as 4, a 33 as 6). The three are then added without reducing.

A total of 22 or less is read as it stands; above that, its digits are added (25 gives 7). The raw total therefore runs from 3 to 27: 1 and 2 never come out of this calculation. Example: active 5, hereditary 8, and life path 6 make 19, the Sun, whose reduction is 1. Other methods draw an arcana from the date alone, or keep master numbers in the sum: the results then change.

Common mistakes with the unique number

  1. Keeping master numbers in the sum: an active 11 counts as 2, a hereditary 22 as 4, a life path 33 as 6.

  2. Reducing a total of 19 right away. Up to 22, the total is read as it stands; its reduction, here 1, stays in the background.

  3. Subtracting 22 from a total that is too high, as some arcana calculations do: 25 − 22 = 3, whereas here the digits are added, 2 + 5 = 7.

  4. Using the name you go by for the hereditary number: only the surname at birth enters the calculation.

  5. Reading the arcana as a card drawn. It lends an image to the number and announces nothing.

Frequently asked questions: unique number

How do you calculate your unique number in numerology?

Add three numbers: the active number (from the first first name), the hereditary number (from the surname at birth), then the life path number, each reduced to between 1 and 9. Keep the total if it is 22 or less; otherwise, add its digits. With 7, 4, and 9, you get 20, Judgement, which reduces to 2.

What is the difference between the unique number and the birth arcana?

Both link a number to one of the twenty-two major arcana, but they do not start from the same data. The birth arcana is generally drawn from the date alone. Fermier’s unique number combines the date (through the life path number) and the name (through the first name and surname). The two results sometimes coincide, though that is not the rule.

Is the unique number the same as the Maturity number?

No, even though some sites use both names for the same thing. Here, the Maturity number combines Expression and life path; it speaks of what gains assurance around ages 35 to 45. The unique number adds first name, surname, and life path, is read on the scale of the 22 arcana, and gives a general impression, with no particular age.

Does the unique number change over a lifetime?

No. Its three components are fixed at birth: the first official first name, the original family surname, and the date. Neither a marriage nor a nickname changes the calculation. What moves is the way of reading it: the image of the arcana takes on a different relief at thirty and at sixty, depending on what you have been through. The number itself never varies.

Can the unique number be a master number?

The totals 11 and 22 exist, but they are read first as arcana: Strength for the 11, the Fool for the 22. Their reduction, 2 and 4, adds a nuance in the background, as for any value above 9. The 33, however, is impossible: the highest total, 27, is brought down to 9. As for the three components, their master numbers are simplified before the addition.

Is the unique number a tarot spread?

No. No card is drawn, and the result depends on no chance: it follows from a calculation on the first name, surname, and date. The arcana of the same rank serves only as an image, because the major arcana of the Marseille tarot number twenty-two and the unique number scale stops at 22. It is neither a view of the future nor an answer to a question: a figure to help remember the color of a profile.

Who created the unique number in numerology?

This site takes it from Jean-Daniel Fermier, who presents it in “ABC de la numérologie” (éditions Grancher, 1984), the book whose method is followed here. We have not found an older source that describes it under this name and with this calculation, though we cannot say he invented it. Elsewhere, the same name is used for other calculations, in particular the Maturity number. On this site, each value is matched with the major arcana of the same rank.

Compound first name or several first names: which counts for the unique number?

Only the first official first name counts, in full if it is compound: for Marie-Claire, both parts are added into the active number. The following first names do not enter the main reading of the report. A full reading that adds them remains possible and may change the active number, and therefore the unique number. The surname is always the one at birth.

How do you read your unique number with the rest of the report?

As a synthesis, to keep for the end. Start with the life path number, the Expression number, and the Soul Urge number; then see whether the image of the arcana brings them together or shakes them up. A life path 4 with a unique number 19, the Sun, for example, invites bringing warmth into a highly structured life. Above 9, its reduction is also compared with the profile’s other numbers.
