Soul Urge number: calculation and meaning

The Soul Urge number, or soul number, describes what drives you to act: the desire of the heart, read in the vowels of the name.

What is the Soul Urge number?

The Soul Urge number goes by several names depending on the author: spiritual drive, soul number, heart’s desire. All refer to the same thing: a person’s hidden engine, what they seek when no one is watching. Two colleagues can hold the same job with the same effectiveness, one for recognition, the other for security or the pleasure of learning. That difference in motivation is what the Soul Urge number tries to name.

Only vowels go into this calculation, and Y is one of them. Each keeps its usual value: A is 1, E is 5, I is 9, O is 6, U is 3 and Y is 7. You add them up, then reduce the sum to a single digit, unless it stops on a master number.

Example with Lucie Moreau. The vowels of LUCIE are U, I and E: 3 + 9 + 5 = 17. Those of MOREAU are O, E, A and U: 6 + 5 + 1 + 3 = 15. The total, 32, gives 3 + 2 = 5. Her Soul Urge number is 5, while her Expression is 6: what she shows and what drives her are not the same thing.

That is the great particularity of this position: it is not necessarily visible. Expression describes the image others perceive; the Soul Urge number describes what goes on behind it. When the two agree, you are understood quickly. When they differ, the people around you may be wrong about what matters to you, and you may take time to put it into words yourself. The Personality number, calculated on the consonants, completes the picture: the Soul Urge says what you want, the Personality says how you go about getting it. As for the life path number, it says nothing of your desires: it describes the circumstances in which they will have to find their place.

Other names. It is also called the Heart’s Desire, the soul number, or the motivation number: it is the same calculation, with the vowels.

Why other sites sometimes find a different number

The first cause of difference is Y. Many methods treat it sometimes as a vowel, sometimes as a consonant, depending on pronunciation; some never count it among the vowels. Here, Y is always a vowel, which makes the calculation reproducible by anyone. Next come the choice of name (birth or in use), the number of first names kept, and the retention of master numbers. Fermier’s book, “ABC de la numérologie,” serves as the reference: first name, birth name, French school.

Common mistakes with the Soul Urge number

  1. Setting Y aside because it sounds like a consonant in a given name. Here, it stays a vowel and brings its 7 points.

  2. Keeping only the vowels of the first name. Those of the birth surname also go into the sum.

  3. Reading a single vowel in place of all of them. The first vowel of the name is a different notion, which describes a reflex; the Soul Urge number adds up all the vowels.

  4. Judging the result by what you show. This number describes motivations that are often discreet: compare it with your choices rather than your image.

Frequently asked questions about the Soul Urge number

Is Y a vowel in numerology?

Here, yes, always. Y is worth 7 and goes into the Soul Urge calculation, whatever the word: Yves, Sylvie or Maryse. Other methods count it as a consonant when it precedes a vowel, which shifts 7 points from the vowels to the consonants and changes two numbers at once, the Soul Urge and the Personality. Expression does not move, since it adds up all the letters.

What is the difference between Soul Urge, spiritual drive, and soul number?

There is none: these names cover a single operation, the addition of the vowels of the first name and the birth surname. “Spiritual drive” (élan spirituel) comes up often among French authors, “soul number” is the English term, and you also come across “heart’s desire.” In every case, it concerns deep motivations, to be told apart from what the person shows, which belongs to the Expression number.

Why don’t I recognize myself in my Soul Urge number?

That is common, because this position describes motivations we do not always put into words. First check the calculation: Y counted as a vowel, birth surname, first name. Then look at your choices rather than your words: what made you change course, what you do when no one is asking anything of you. If the gap persists, compare with the full reading, which adds your other first names.

How do you calculate your Soul Urge number?

Write your first name, then your birth surname, and keep only the vowels: A, E, I, O, U, as well as Y. Give each its value (A = 1, E = 5, I = 9, then O = 6, U = 3, Y = 7) and add. For Yann Dupont: Y and A make 7 + 1 = 8, U and O make 3 + 6 = 9, so 17 in all, then 1 + 7 = 8. His Soul Urge number is 8. If the reduction hits 11, 22 or 33, you keep that master number.

What is the link between the Soul Urge number and the Expression number?

The Soul Urge number is a part of Expression: it reads only the vowels, whereas Expression takes all the letters. The first says what you desire, the second what others perceive. When they carry the same digit, your wants are read quickly and people figure you out easily. When they differ, a gap appears between the image given and what matters most: a person with Expression 8, very self-assured in meetings, may have a Soul Urge 2 who above all seeks harmony with loved ones.

Can the Soul Urge number be a master number?

Yes, like the other numbers drawn from the name. The sum of the vowels only has to pass through 11, 22 or 33 during the reduction: a sum of 29 or 38 ends at 11, and you keep 11. Each master number stays linked to its reduction, 11 to 2, 22 to 4, 33 to 6. In this position, it describes the same aspirations as that digit, but carried by a higher expectation, sometimes hard to satisfy day to day.

What does the Soul Urge number say about love?

It is often the most telling number for life as a couple, because it describes what you need to feel good with someone. A Soul Urge 5 asks for movement and space, a 6 a warm home, a 7 respected moments of withdrawal. Misunderstandings arise when the other responds to your Expression, that is, to what you show, while missing this need. Comparing the Soul Urge numbers of both partners helps name what each expects without saying it.

Can the Soul Urge number be the same as the life path number?

Yes, and it is nothing exceptional, since both range from 1 to 9 with three master numbers. They do not speak about the same subject, however: the Soul Urge describes what you desire, the life path number the ground you walk on. When they coincide, circumstances tend to meet your wants, and you feel in your place without searching much. The downside exists: you can lock yourself into a single register. The other numbers of the profile then provide the counterweight.

How do you count accented vowels or Πfor the Soul Urge number?

Accents disappear before the calculation: É, È and Ê count as E, so 5; Ï counts as I, so 9. The ligature Œ splits into two vowels, O then E, which bring 6 and 5. The rarer Æ becomes A then E. A compound first name keeps all its vowels, without the hyphen. These rules give the same result whether the name is written by hand, on a passport, or in an email.
