Light and sky
The Sun then travels very low over the southern horizon, its rays arrive at a slant, and its days last barely more than nine hours at our latitudes; the weeks before the solstice are the stingiest with light of the whole year.
As seen from Earth, the Sun at this time crosses the direction of Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, about 26,000 light-years away. The Sun hides it from us like the rest of the daytime sky, and it is in the heart of summer, at night, that the densest part of the Milky Way is best seen. The astronomers’ Sagittarius is visited by the Sun only at the end of the sign’s season and after it: the precession offset here reaches nearly a whole sign.
