Light and sky
Wherever you are, on that day the Sun rises almost due east and sets almost due west.
The length of the day is nearly equal to that of the night, with a slight difference due to the size of the solar disk and to refraction. Then night gains the advantage, and faster than at any other time: each day loses close to three minutes of light. The sign is the only one in the zodiac that represents neither an animal nor a human being. Before the Romans, the Greeks saw the claws of Scorpio, the chelae, in this part of the sky; it was in Roman times that the stars were regrouped into a balance beam, which Manilius describes in the 1st century as the one that equalizes the hours of day and night. The autumn equinox was then near this part of the sky. Today, the equinox point has moved and the Sun crosses the constellation Libra only in the heart of autumn.
