Light and sky
Days recede faster and faster, by close to three minutes a day near the equinox, and the Sun sets markedly earlier than in the heart of summer.
In Europe, the grain harvests wrap up and the grape harvests begin; the school and working year resumes. The sign is pictured as a woman holding an ear of grain, and the star that bears this name, Spica, Latin for “the ear of grain,” is the brightest in the constellation. It was through Spica that Hipparchus discovered the precession of the equinoxes, around 130 BCE, noting that its position relative to the equinox had changed since his predecessors’ measurements. Today, the Sun passes in front of the astronomers’ Virgo only in autumn.
