Mercury bears the name of the messenger of the Roman gods, the Hermes of the Greeks, protector of merchants, travelers, and writings.

Astrology entrusts to him thought, speech, exchanges, short trips, contracts, and, more recently, communication tools. The classical authors already ranked retrograde motion among a planet’s weaknesses: William Lilly, in Christian Astrology (1647), counts it among its “accidental debilities.” The idea that a period of Mercury retrograde disrupts everyday life spread mostly with the popular astrology of the 20th century, then on social media, where it is often used to explain everything that goes wrong.

According to this tradition, these three weeks would be favorable to everything that starts with “re-”: rereading, reviewing, revising, repairing, reconnecting with someone, resuming a project set aside. They would suit launches, important signatures, device purchases, or last-minute trips less, which are reputed to be more exposed to delays and mix-ups. This advice is reported, not recommended: no link has been established between Mercury’s apparent position and everyday breakdowns or errors, and nothing requires you to postpone a decision. If the period invites anything, it is to check twice, which never hurts.

No. Mercury always turns the same way around the Sun. Usually three times a year, and sometimes four periods begin within the same calendar year. From one retrograde to the next, about 116 days go by, and each backward motion lasts about twenty days.
