What tradition says about the Moon
In Hellenistic astrology, the Moon is the second luminary, the light of the night.
Ptolemy gives it Cancer as its domicile and Taurus as its exaltation; it would be in detriment in Capricorn and in fall in Scorpio. For a nighttime birth chart, several ancient authors would consider it more important than the Sun.
Tradition associates the Moon with whatever fluctuates: mood, habits, home, memory, the bond with the first care received. Modern astrologers would see in it the reactive part of the personality, what soothes and what alarms. The Arabs, and then medieval Europeans, also divided its path into 28 mansions, about one per night.

How the Moon is calculated
The tool calculates the Moon’s longitude for the moment and place of your birth, using the same ephemerides as the rest of the site.
The Moon moves about 13 degrees per day, a little more or less depending on its distance from Earth: it crosses a 30-degree sign in two and a half days on average.
Without a birth time, the calculation uses the positions at the start and the end of the day (midnight to midnight). If the Moon stays in the same sign all day, the answer is certain. Otherwise, the tool displays the time of the change and the two possible signs. An approximate time, such as “late morning,” is often enough to settle it.

Frequently asked questions about the Moon sign
How do I calculate my Moon sign?
You need the birth date, the place, and ideally the time. The Moon’s position is calculated for that moment, then placed within the twelve signs of the tropical zodiac. The result depends on the time zone: midnight in Paris and midnight in Montreal are not the same moment. The tool on this page converts the local time and tells you whether the Moon changed signs that day.
Can I find my Moon sign without my birth time?
Often, yes. The Moon spends two to three days in each sign: on about every other day, it does not change signs between the start and the end of the day, and the date is enough. On the other days, two signs remain possible and the tool gives the time of the changeover. A family memory, such as “around lunchtime,” can then settle it without knowing the exact time.
What is the difference between a Sun sign and a Moon sign?
The Sun sign depends on the Sun’s position, which stays about a month in each sign; the Moon sign depends on the Moon, which changes signs every two or three days. Tradition entrusts identity and direction to the Sun, and needs, emotions, and reflexes to the Moon. Two people with the same Sun sign therefore very often have different Moons.
Why does the Moon change signs so quickly?
Because it goes around Earth in about 27.3 days, while the Sun takes a year to travel through the zodiac. Its apparent speed varies: near perigee, when it is closest to Earth, it exceeds 15 degrees per day; near apogee, it drops to about 12 degrees. The same sign can thus be crossed in two days and a few hours, or in almost three.
