What tradition says

Saturn, the Greeks’ Cronus, carries time, limits, duration, and responsibility.

Astrologers of antiquity made it the slowest and gravest of the visible planets, the guardian of the border of the known world. The modern phrase “Saturn return” spread mainly from the 1970s, with Liz Greene’s books on Saturn. Modern astrology sees in it a stage where you would measure what you have built and what you have merely endured: work, relationship, home, promises made. For his part, the psychologist Daniel Levinson described, with no tie to astrology, an “age 30 transition” in which many people revise their choices. A coincidence of age, which establishes nothing between the planet and lives.

A reading of the sky to take as food for thought, not to be followed blindly: the dates are calculated, and what tradition associates with them is reported in the conditional, announcing nothing. Why?

Frequently asked questions about the Saturn return

What is the Saturn return?

It is the moment Saturn comes back to the exact longitude it had when you were born, after about 29 and a half years. The fact is astronomical and can be calculated. What astrology associates with it, a stocktaking, a turning point of maturity, is a reported tradition, and nothing guarantees that it applies to you.

At what age does the Saturn return happen?

The first happens between roughly twenty-eight and thirty and a half, depending on where Saturn stood at your birth: its speed varies, because its orbit is not a circle. The second arrives around fifty-eight or fifty-nine. This page’s tool gives your exact dates rather than an average.

Why are there sometimes three dates?

Because Saturn appears to move backward for several months each year. If your birth degree lies in that zone, the planet crosses it, comes back over it moving retrograde, then crosses it one last time. Each pass is an exact return. Astrologers see one long period in it, not three separate events.

Do I need my birth time?

No, not for the dates. Saturn moves very slowly: an error of a few hours in the birth time shifts the result by a few hours, which the calendar barely shows. The time is used for other calculations, such as the rising sign or Saturn’s house, which this tool does not offer.

What does tradition say about the Saturn return?

It holds it to be an age of stocktaking: you would look at what holds and what weighs, and revise your commitments. The claim is reported in the conditional and announces nothing. Many people notice no turning point in it, and others place it far from the calculated dates.
