When it goes off balance
When the 13 gets stuck, change becomes either a threat or a drug.
In the first case, you keep everything: boxes never opened in the garage, clothes that no longer fit, a job that wears you down, a relationship that went out years ago, all out of fear of the emptiness that would follow. In the second, you break what works out of boredom: a quit on impulse, an abrupt breakup, driving too fast, risky bets to feel the adrenaline. Speech hardens, with curt remarks and a show of indifference to other people’s pain. Disorder takes over the desk, the calendar, the paperwork, and daily habits. Some people watch their loved ones too closely and call ten times if a child is late getting home. The shift often follows a loss, a layoff, a divorce, or long months of standing still.
