Guardian angel: the 72 angels, with dates and hours

Your guardian angel according to Lenain: three angels among 72, one for the body, one for speech, one for the soul.

The 72 angels and their dates

According to Lenain, each angel rules five days of the year; choose a choir or your birth month.

The calendar of the angels

Choose a date: Lenain’s table gives the angel of those five days, the angel of the body, and the angel of the day, the angel of speech. Today is shown first.

Three traditions, three kinds of angels

  • The Christian guardian angel

In Christianity, each person is said to be accompanied by a guardian angel, with no name assigned. The Catholic Church in fact discourages naming angels other than Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael.

  • The 72 angels of the Kabbalah

Three verses of Exodus give Kabbalah a divine name of 72 names, the Shem ha-Mephorash. Since Reuchlin, in 1517, Christian Kabbalah has made them 72 angels; in 1823 Lenain gave them dates, hours, and portraits.

  • The archangels

Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael are named in the Bible; Uriel and Metatron come from ancient books left outside the canon, Jophiel or Chamuel mostly from later lists.

Prayer to the guardian angel

The most widespread prayer to the guardian angel is a short medieval Latin prayer, Angele Dei, which the Catholic Church counts among its common prayers. Long attributed to Anselm of Canterbury, it is now linked to a text by Reginald of Canterbury. It is reported here as a text of tradition, with a word-for-word translation.

Angele Dei, qui custos es mei, me tibi commissum pietate superna, illumina, custodi, rege et guberna. Amen.

Angel of God, who are my guardian, to whom the goodness from on high has entrusted me: enlighten me, guard me, guide me, and govern me. Amen.

Angele Dei (Angel of God). Literal translation by Versana, from the Latin text. Latin text: Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (2005), appendix A, “Common Prayers.” Origin: long attributed to Anselm of Canterbury, linked to a prayer by Reginald of Canterbury (11th–12th century).

The nine choirs

Lenain arranges his angels in the nine choirs of Christian angelology, which he calls the “orders of angels”: from the Seraphim, the highest, down to the Angels. Each has eight angels, with one exception that his text reveals: seven among the Archangels, nine among the Angels.

The source: Lazare Lenain

Lazare Lenain published La Science cabalistique in Amiens in 1823, in a print run of 500 copies. For each angel he gives an attribute, a span of five days counted from March 20, five days presided over in the year, a twenty-minute slot, a psalm verse, and the character he attributes to whoever is born under that angel. Modern lists derive from it, but often start the year on March 21 and distribute the days differently: their dates differ by a day or two. Versana follows Lenain’s table and flags these differences.

Guardian angel: your questions

What is a guardian angel?

In Christian tradition, an angel who accompanies each person, with no name assigned. Christian Kabbalah offers another reading: 72 angels drawn from a divine name, which Lazare Lenain distributed in 1823 among the days and hours of the year. Versana reports both traditions without mixing them.

How do you find your guardian angel?

According to Lenain, two pieces of information are enough, the day of birth and the hour: the first gives the angel of the five-day span and that of the day, the second the angel of the soul. The “Guardian angel by birth date” tool does this calculation in your browser, sending nothing.

Why three angels and not just one?

Lenain takes up an idea he attributes to Agrippa: everyone would have three angels, one for the body, one for speech and character, one for the soul. Many sites keep only the first, tied to birth dates; Versana gives all three.

Why do my dates differ from another site’s?

Lenain starts the angelic year on March 20 at midnight, each angel reigning five days. Many modern lists start from March 21 and distribute the remaining days differently: their dates differ by a day or two. Versana follows Lenain’s table and notes this difference.
