Your tarot birth card
What is a tarot birth card?
A tarot birth card links a date to one of the twenty-two major cards of the Marseille deck, from the Magician to the Fool. The idea is simple: each card carries a number, and a calculation on your birthday lands on one of those numbers. The figure that matches it becomes a mirror, an image to lean on when reflecting on how you approach things.
This pairing of tarot and numbers is not a card reading: no card is shuffled or turned over, and nothing is announced. From the card you keep what it shows: a figure, a posture, a few objects, some colors. These elements are a starting point for reading a profile, the way you might look at a painting for a long time and ask yourself what you recognize in it.
To get something out of it, read the page for your card as a portrait to discuss, not as a verdict. Keep what looks like you, set aside what feels foreign. Each page also links the card to its number in numerology: 14 points to 5, 19 to 1, and 22 to the master number 22 (or to 4, once reduced). That way you find the same vocabulary as in your report.

What the birth card does not say
A tarot birth card does not forecast anything and does not replace a consultation. It is a working image, not a destiny. Do not confuse it either with the unique number in your report, which adds the active number, the hereditary number, and the life path number: both notions use the same scale of 22 cards, but their calculations differ, and so do their results.

How is it calculated?
Day + month + year, reduced while the total is above 22.
- 114 + 3 + 1987 = 2004
- 22 + 0 + 0 + 4 = 6
- 3Card VI: The Lovers
Take the day, add the month, then add the full birth year. If the total is above 22, add its digits, and repeat until you land on a number between 1 and 22. Example: March 14, 1987, so 14 + 3 + 1987 = 2004. Since 2004 is above 22, you calculate 2 + 0 + 0 + 4 = 6: the birth card is 6, the Lovers. The 22 corresponds to the Fool, which many decks number 0 or leave unnumbered.
With this method, 1, the Magician, never comes up for a date in the 20th or 21st century, and cards 2, 14, 15, 16, and 17 are rare (each under 2% of births since 1940); for people born between 1969 and 2025, 17 never comes up, and 16 and 18 almost never do. Other formulas circulate: the eight digits of the date one by one, the century counted separately, or 22 subtracted instead of adding the digits. The result can then change; below the calculator, all four are shown for your date. We follow the method above, one of the most common in France.
Frequently asked questions about the tarot birth card
How do you calculate your tarot birth card?
Add the day, the month, and the full year, then repeat the operation on the total as long as it is above 22. For March 14, 1987: 14 + 3 + 1987 = 2004, then 2 + 0 + 0 + 4 = 6, the Lovers.
What is a tarot birth card?
It is the major card of the Tarot de Marseille associated with a birth date through a simple calculation. It serves as an image for asking yourself how you approach life, like a portrait to discuss, with no reading and no forecast. The figures and numbers stay in the service of reflection: no one needs to believe in tarot to use it.
Why are there only cards from 1 to 22?
The Tarot de Marseille has twenty-two major arcana. The calculation therefore stops at 22, the Fool, often numbered 0. Beyond that, you reduce the total by adding its digits until you fall back within this scale. The Fool, last in the series, escapes numbering: it is placed sometimes at the start of the deck, sometimes at the very end.
Why is the Magician never drawn?
For a date in the 20th and 21st centuries, the total is a four-digit number, and adding its digits never gives 1: the smallest possible result is 2. With the common method, this card therefore stays out of reach. With other formulas, the Magician remains possible.
Why does another calculation give another card?
Several formulas circulate, and they diverge for the same date. Take June 13, 1972. Day + month + year, the method followed here as with Mary K. Greer: 13 + 6 + 1972 = 1991, then 20, Judgement. The eight digits one by one: 29, then 11, Strength (XI in the Marseille deck, VIII in the Rider-Waite). Day + month + century + two-digit year: 13 + 6 + 19 + 72 = 110, then 2, the High Priestess. The eight digits minus 22: 29 − 22 = 7, the Chariot. None is official: each keeps its own logic, and the reading matters more than the number.
Tarot birth card and unique number: are they the same thing?
No. The unique number in the report combines three numbers from the report, including the life path number, whereas the birth card comes only from the date. Both use the scale of 22 cards, but rarely give the same result. One reads as a portrait of the date, the other as a synthesis of the report: the two complement each other.
