When it goes off balance
When the 2 goes off balance, discretion turns into secrecy and caution into suspicion.
You read hidden intentions into a harmless message, you keep to yourself what hurts you and then talk about it to a third party. Confidences received become a currency, you present a different version of the facts to each person, until you lose track of the versions told. Others slide into inertia: days spent waiting for things to sort themselves out, easy tears, complaints with no specific request. Gullibility lurks too, faced with a pushy salesperson, a miracle ad, or an online guru. The body is neglected: meals on the go, disordered sleep, a cluttered house, an evening drink that becomes a habit. These drifts often follow a betrayal, a conflict with the mother, or a period when you stayed silent too long.
