The calculation, step by step
Add the day and month of birth
Add the day and the month of your birth, ignoring the year. For example, a birth on March 14 gives 14 + 3 = 17.
Add the year to read (not the birth year)
Add to this first total the year you want to read, in full: for 2026, 17 + 2026 gives 2043.
Reduce the total while it is above 22
As long as the result is above 22, reduce it by adding its digits: 2 + 0 + 4 + 3 = 9. This number, between 1 and 22, points to the Major Arcana card whose image becomes your theme for the year.

Frequently asked questions about the year card
How is the year card calculated?
You add the day and the month of your birth, then the year to read, in full. A total above 22 is reduced by adding its digits, until it falls between 1 and 22: that number points to a Major Arcana card. The tool on this page does these steps for you.
How does it relate to the tarot birth card?
The birth card comes from your birth date alone and does not change. The card of the year adds the year to read: it forms a theme of passage, renewed every year. The two can be read side by side.
Does the year card announce events?
No event can be read in this card. It offers an image and a question to keep in mind during the year, like a thread of reflection. What you live belongs to you, and the card only gives a language for looking at it.
