Numerology glossary: 50 terms defined simply

This glossary defines fifty numerology terms in a few lines, with how each one is calculated, and links to the page that covers it in detail.

The vocabulary of numerology

Numerology has a language of its own: life path number, active number, pinnacle, transit letter. Some words name a number that comes from the birth date, others a number that comes from the letters of the name, and still others a length of time or a way of reading. This glossary gathers them in alphabetical order, from personal year to sub-number. Each entry says what the term is and how it is calculated, then links to the page on the site that develops it, with examples.

The definitions follow the Versana method: the Pythagorean letter chart, reduction that keeps 11, 22, and 33, and Y counted as a vowel. Terms specific to the destiny matrix follow the method of Natalia Ladini. Other schools proceed differently, and the page devoted to them presents those variants. If a word you read on another site is not listed here, it probably belongs to another school: the schools page will help you place it. It may also be another name for a term already defined: the synonym cross-references, shown on the page, lead to the right entry.

22 vibrations (Kabbalistic numerology)

A modern French method, called Kabbalistic: the letters of the usual first name are added using the Pythagorean chart, the total is divided by 22 and the remainder kept, a zero remainder counting as 22. Each vibration is linked to a Hebrew letter, from aleph to tav. It is a recent adaptation, distinct from gematria.

A

Active number (first name number)

The total of the letters of the first name alone, reduced while keeping 11, 22, and 33. It evokes the temperament you show day to day, as you are called in everyday life. It is calculated like the Expression number, but on a single word. Some authors call it the evolution number.

Angel number

A sequence of repeated digits that people often notice, such as 222 or 1111. Here it is read through calculation: its digits are added and then reduced, with 222 giving 6. The word “angel” comes from a recent tradition that the site presents without following it.

Annual vibration

A marker from 1 to 12 that follows a twelve-year cycle: you take the age reached, divide it by 12, keep the remainder, and add 1. It changes at each birthday, not on January 1, and is read separately from the personal year.

Address number

Another name for: House number numerology

B

Birth month number

The number of the birth month, from 1 to 12. It is read as the climate of the early years, those of childhood and adolescence. Once reduced, it also gives the formative cycle, and it enters the calculation of the life path number and of the challenges.

Learn more : Birth month number
Birthday number

The day of the month you were born, from 1 to 31, read for itself and then through its reduction: a 29 becomes 11, which becomes 2. It represents a gift, a natural aptitude. It is also used for the productive cycle and for several challenges.

Learn more : Birthday number
Bridge number

The difference between two numbers each reduced to a single digit, such as the life path number against the name number, or the soul urge against the personality number. It ranges from 0 to 8. Zero signals two identical numbers; a wide gap shows two distant registers that you need to learn to connect.

C

Chaldean numerology

A school that gives letters digits from 1 to 8 without following alphabetical order, the 9 being given to no letter. It works rather on the name in everyday use and reads the compound number before reducing it. Its name refers to ancient Chaldea, though no lineage has been shown.

Learn more : Chaldean numerology
Challenge number

The gap between two elements of the birth date, each reduced to a single digit. This gives a first challenge (day and month), a second (day and year), then a major challenge, the gap between the first two. They range from 0 to 8 and point to what needs work, never to a fatality.

Learn more : Challenge number
Compatibility chart

A list of the numbers that go well together, taken from Fermier’s “ABC de la numérologie,” the reference of French Pythagorean numerology: the 1 goes with 3, 5, 6, and 9, the 2 with 4, 7, and 8, and so on. Master numbers follow their reduction. It expresses affinities, never a verdict on a couple.

Learn more : Compatibility chart
Compound number

A two-digit total obtained before reduction, such as 10, 15, or 29. The Chaldean school gives it a meaning of its own. The method followed here reads it mostly through its reduction, keeping 11, 22, and 33, and shows it when it adds precision to a number, like the sub-number of the destiny helpers.

Learn more : Compound number
Cornerstone

In some authors, the first letter of the first name alone. See: Initials

D

Destiny helpers

The sum of only the last two digits of the birth year, reduced to a single digit: 87 gives 15, then 6. It points to the supports you have without seeking them, a help that appears at the right moment. For a birth in 2000, the last two digits (“00”) give no numerical help.

Destiny Matrix

A recent method, from the Russian-speaking world and attributed to Natalia Ladini, that places the 22 major arcana of the tarot on an octagon drawn from the birth date. Any total above 22 is brought down to the sum of its digits. It does not use the name and is read by zones: talents, money, relationships, family lines.

Dominant number (hidden passion)

The number that appears most often in the full name, provided it reaches at least three letters. If more than two numbers tie, the chart is said to be balanced and none dominates. It shows the main color of the name, the one found everywhere.

Destiny number

Another name for: Expression number

E

Energy (Destiny Matrix)

In the destiny matrix, the name given to each of the numbers from 1 to 22 placed on the diagram. Each energy corresponds to a major arcanum, the 1 to the Magician, the 22 to the Fool, and its meaning changes with the zone where it falls: a 6 placed at the center does not mean what a 6 placed on the relationships line means.

Learn more : Energy (Destiny Matrix)
Excess number

A number that appears on more than 25% of the letters of the full name: it takes up too much room, and its qualities then tend to overflow. It is spotted on the chart itself. It is the opposite of the missing number, but both are observed in the same table.

Learn more : Excess number
Expression number

The sum of every letter of the birth name, first names included, reduced to a single digit or a master number. It describes talents and the way you present yourself to the world, what others perceive first about you. Some authors also call it the destiny number.

Learn more : Expression number

F

First vowel

The first vowel met when reading the birth surname, with Y counting as a vowel. It gives a spontaneous reflex, the first reaction before thinking. It is found simply, with no calculation: it is the letter itself that you read, not a total.

Learn more : First vowel

G

Gematria

A practice from the Hebrew tradition in which each letter of the alphabet corresponds to a numerical value, so that a word has a total. Two words with the same total can be linked and commented on. It is a method for studying texts, distinct from the Pythagorean chart followed by this site.

Learn more : Gematria

H

Hereditary number (surname number)

The total of the letters of the birth surname, reduced while keeping the master numbers. It represents what comes from the family line: an inherited way of being, family habits. It is read alongside the active number, drawn from the first name. Some authors call it the heredity number or the passive number.

Learn more : Hereditary number (surname number)
House number numerology

A reading of a door number: the number of the apartment is used when there is one, otherwise that of the building. The digits are added, a letter contributes its value, then the total is reduced to a single digit, master numbers aside. The street does not count in the operation.

Heart’s Desire number

Another name for: Soul Urge number

Hidden passion number

Another name for: Dominant number (hidden passion)

I

Inclusion chart

A table that counts, in the full name, how many letters are worth 1, how many are worth 2, and so on up to 9. At a glance it shows the missing numbers, the heavily represented ones, and the ones that dominate. It is the starting tool for spotting the gaps and excesses in a name.

Learn more : Inclusion chart
Initials

The first letter of the first name and the first letter of the surname. Each has its value in the letter chart and its own symbolism. Added together, they give the initials number. They form the visible signature, like a monogram. Some authors call the first name’s initial alone the cornerstone.

K

Karmic debt number

A marker that appears when one of the four main numbers of the report shows 13, 14, 16, or 19 at some stage of its calculation, or when the birthday number is one of them. The word refers to a belief; the site reads in it a lesson that keeps returning. It concerns nearly one profile in two.

Learn more : Karmic debt number
Karmic program

A destiny matrix term for a trio of energies to which the method gives a name, such as 10-11-19. The report spots it wherever these three numbers appear together on the diagram, in any order. “Karmic” belongs to the method’s vocabulary; Versana presents it as a theme for reflection, with its two sides, never as a fatality.

Karmic lesson

Another name for: Missing number (karmic lesson)

L

Letter values

The digit assigned to each letter of the alphabet, from 1 to 9, following alphabetical order in series of nine: the first letter gets 1, the second 2, the ninth 9, and the tenth starts again at 1. This is the so-called Pythagorean chart. Accents are ignored and Y counts as a vowel.

Learn more : Letter values
Life cycles (formative, productive, harvest)

Three great seasons of a life. The formative cycle comes from the birth month and runs to about age 28; the productive cycle comes from the day and runs to about age 57; the harvest cycle comes from the year and follows. Each is reduced and carries its own theme.

Learn more : Life cycles (formative, productive, harvest)
Life goal number

The birth year, digit by digit, gives a total to be narrowed down between 1 and 9: 1987 gives 25, then 7. It indicates the direction toward which life tends, what it seeks to make you feel. It is set against the road described by the life path number.

Learn more : Life goal number
Life path number

It comes from the whole birth date: the three elements are added together and the total is narrowed down to a single digit, except at 11, 22, or 33. It describes the general road of an existence, the experiences that keep coming back. It is the best-known number and the first one people calculate.

Learn more : Life path number
Lo Shu square

A three-by-three magic square from the Chinese tradition, which arranges the numbers 1 to 9 so that the sums of each row, each column, and both diagonals equal 15, with the 5 at the center. According to legend, it appeared on the shell of a turtle that came out of the Luo River. It is linked to the trigrams of the I Ching and to feng shui.

Learn more : Lo Shu square

M

Master number

A double number, 11, 22, or 33, that stays as it is when a calculation arrives at it, instead of being reduced. The method sees in it a more demanding 2, 4, or 6, which many people also live through its reduction. It is not a higher rank, only a stronger tension.

Learn more : Master number
Maturity number

The life path number is added to the Expression number, each already reduced to a single digit, and the total is reduced while keeping 11. It describes what asserts itself with age, rather around 35 to 45: the meeting of the road followed and the personality shown. The 22 does not appear here, since the total never exceeds 18.

Learn more : Maturity number
Mirror hour

A time whose digits form a notable pattern: 11:11, 12:21, 15:51. To read it, you add the four digits shown, then reduce: 11:11 equals 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 4. Master numbers are kept. Many people see a message in it; the site offers a reading, without predicting anything.

Learn more : Mirror hour
Missing number (karmic lesson)

A number from 1 to 9 that no letter of the full name carries, spotted in the inclusion chart. It is read as a quality to develop, never as a flaw. One or two absences are common. It should not be confused with a karmic debt, which comes from a different calculation.

Learn more : Missing number (karmic lesson)

P

Personal day

The number of a given day: the day’s date is added to the personal month, and the sum is narrowed to a single digit. It is the finest scale of the personal calendar. It changes every day and serves as a light marker, to be read as an invitation.

Learn more : Personal day
Personal month

The number of the current month for you: the rank of the month is added to the personal year, and the total is reduced to a single digit. It adds nuance to the general climate of the year. Each month can thus call for a different state of mind, more turned toward action or toward pause.

Learn more : Personal month
Personal year

The number that describes the climate of a year for you: the day and month of your birthday are joined to the current year, and the total is brought down to between 1 and 9. It follows the calendar year and is part of a series of nine years, from launch to review.

Learn more : Personal year
Personality number

The total of the consonants in the birth name, reduced as well. It sheds light on how you take action: how you organize yourself, go about things, and make them concrete. It complements the soul urge number, which covers the vowels, and the Expression number, which combines them.

Learn more : Personality number
Pinnacle

A life stage lasting about nine years, also called a pinnacle. There are four, obtained by combining the day, month, and year of birth. The first ends at 37 minus the life path number, reduced to a single digit; the following ones last nine years each.

Learn more : Pinnacle
Planes of expression

Four families into which the letters of the name are divided: the mental, physical, emotional, and intuitive planes. Each letter belongs to only one; the best-supplied is dominant, and a plane left empty is absent. This breakdown describes how you react, think, feel, and sense.

Learn more : Planes of expression
Pythagorean numerology

The most widespread school in the West: the letters take the values 1 to 9 in turn in alphabetical order, the series starting over after the ninth, and then the totals of the name and the date are reduced to a single digit. By tradition the chart is attributed to Pythagoras, though nothing in his hand survives. It is the method this site follows.

R

Reality number

Another name, in some authors, for: Maturity number

S

Soul Urge number

The total of the vowels alone in the birth name (including Y), reduced like the other numbers. It points to deep motivations, what brings satisfaction at the core. It is also called the heart’s desire or the soul number, depending on the book.

Learn more : Soul Urge number
Sub-number

The intermediate total, before reduction, of the destiny helpers, when it falls between 10 and 22. It adds nuance to these helpers by showing where the final digit comes from: a 6 coming from 15 is not read like a 6 coming directly from a birth in 2006. It is the number as it was before being reduced.

Learn more : Sub-number

T

Tarot birth card

The card of the tarot major arcana linked to the birth date: the whole date is added up, and the total is recomposed digit by digit until it is 22 at most. The result, from 1 to 22, designates the card. According to this method, arcanum I never appears for a recent birth.

Learn more : Tarot birth card
Theosophical reduction

The operation that brings a total down to a single digit by successively adding its digits: 47 becomes 4 + 7 = 11, then 2 if nothing is spared. Here, however, the process stops at 11, 22, and 33. The name comes from French occultism, notably Papus.

Learn more : Theosophical reduction
Transit letter

The letter of the full name that takes over at each year of life. They are run through in order, from birth, and the sequence starts again at the beginning when it reaches the end. The current letter colors the year through its value and its plane, as a complement to the personal year.

Learn more : Transit letter

U

Unique number

Three numbers, each reduced to a single digit, are added: the first name’s, the surname’s, and the birth date’s; the total stays as it is if it does not exceed 22. The result is a value from 1 to 22, which echoes the major arcana of the tarot. The notion is specific to the method followed here.

Universal day

A number valid for everyone for the length of a day: the day’s date is added to the universal month, and the total is brought down to a single digit. On October 4, 2026, that gives 2 + 4 = 6. It comes from the date alone; the personal day, by contrast, starts from your personal year and varies from reader to reader.

Learn more : Universal day
Universal month

A number shared by everyone for a given month: you add the rank of the month to the reduced universal year, and this total is also brought down to between 1 and 9. In 2026, universal year 1, October gives 1 + 10 = 11, then 2. It describes the collective climate of the month, which each person lives in their own way according to their personal month.

Learn more : Universal month
Universal year

A number shared by everyone for a given year: you add the digits of the year, with 2027 giving 2 + 0 + 2 + 7 = 11. A master number is kept and lived as its reduction, here a 2. It differs from the personal year, which is specific to each person.

Frequently asked questions about numerology vocabulary

Which term should I start with as a numerology beginner?

Start with the life path number, the one from your birth, then the Expression number, which comes from all the letters of the name. These two notions give the framework. The other terms then fill in an aspect: what motivates you, how you act, the current year.

Does a term mean the same thing in every school of numerology?

Not always. A word like “Expression number” or “Personality number” can cover a different calculation depending on the school, and some use other names for the same thing. This glossary gives the meaning retained by Versana, the one used by its calculation engine.

Do I need to remember everything to read my report?

No. The report explains each notion at the moment it appears, with its calculation. The glossary serves as a reference: in a few lines you find a word you came across along the way, then follow the link if you want to dig deeper.
