House number numerology: find your address number

House number numerology reads the feel of your home from its door number: a reading framework, not a destiny.

What a home’s number says

Every home has a number, and numerology draws from it a single number that describes the atmosphere the place tends to favor. A house 2 leans toward gentleness and quiet evenings for two, a house 5 toward comings and goings, a house 8 toward paperwork spread across the table. There is nothing mysterious in that: it is a reading framework, a pretext to look at how you live.

The most useful way to read it is the opposite of what you expect from a horoscope: it does not hand you an answer, it asks a question. The number does not sort a home into good or bad. It suggests something else: does the feel of this place answer your current needs? If you long for calm in a house 5, that is no mistake: it simply shows where you will need to create a corner of silence.

One simple idea serves as a thread: the place does not act on you, it makes certain things easier. In a lively home, you invite people without thinking about it; in a calm one, you read without effort. Everyone makes use of this, or does the opposite, depending on their needs.

Each number has its own page, from 1 to 9, then 11, 22, and 33. There you will find the general feel, family life, life as a couple or with roommates, a few layout ideas, and the flip side of each atmosphere.

The calculation, step by step

Start from the door number: the apartment number if there is one, otherwise the house number. Add its digits, and repeat until you have a single digit, except for the totals 11, 22, and 33. So 12 gives 1 + 2 = 3, 29 gives 2 + 9 = 11, and 104 reads 1 + 0 + 4 = 5.

A letter counts for its place in the alphabet (A = 1, B = 2…), and bis, ter, quater (French address suffixes, like “12A,” “12B”) count as 2, 3, and 4: door 12 bis makes 1 + 2 + 2 = 5, and 47 ter makes 4 + 7 + 3 = 14, then 5. The street name is not part of the calculation.

Door numbers across traditions

What other cultures say about numbers, reported as is: none of these traditions plays a part in this page’s calculation.

  • In China

In Mandarin, 8 is pronounced bā, a sound close to fā, which is associated with prosperity: addresses, license plates, and phone numbers rich in 8s are sought after there. The 4, sì, goes the opposite way, because it sounds like the word for death; some buildings in East Asia therefore show no fourth floor, or skip the numbers containing that digit.

  • In the West

In Western countries, it is 13 that raises eyebrows, to the point that the fear of this number has a scholarly name, triskaidekaphobia. Many towers and hotels go straight from the twelfth to the fourteenth floor, and in France you come across streets where 13 gives way to a 12 bis.

  • Feng shui

Feng shui looks first at the entrance, seen as the mouth through which energy enters the house: it examines the orientation of the door, the open space in front of it, and what you see as you step through. When a practitioner takes an interest in the number, they read it according to the sounds of Chinese, not by addition.

  • Vastu (India)

In India, vastu shastra, an ancient body of architectural knowledge, focuses on the orientation of the entrance and the place of each room relative to the cardinal points. Some contemporary practitioners add a reading of the number. The numerology on this site, for its part, looks for no omen: it reads a feel.

13, 14, 17, 38: numbers people notice

  • 13
    1 + 3 = 4

1 + 3 = 4: this door reads as a house 4, the house of order and foundations. Yet it is the number that Western superstition surrounds the most; the method gives it no meaning of its own.

    House 4
  • 14
    1 + 4 = 5

With 1 + 4 = 5, you get a house 5: a home of passage and curiosity, with a door that is rarely closed and furniture that moves around.

    House 5
  • 17
    1 + 7 = 8

In Italy, this number has a bad reputation: written in Roman numerals, XVII forms an anagram of VIXI, “I have lived,” a formula from Latin epitaphs. Its digits give 1 + 7 = 8, a house of management and projects.

    House 8
  • 38
    3 + 8 = 11

Here, the reduction stops short: 3 + 8 = 11, a master number that the method keeps. It describes a sensitive place, a kind of house 2 carried higher, where you perceive atmospheres up close.

What this number doesn’t say

This number decides nothing: not a purchase, not a rental, not a move. It does not replace your tastes, the light in the rooms, the morning commute, or the price of the rent. And it weighs less than your personal chart, which crosses your own numbers: the place is only a backdrop around you. Finally, the street name, the floor, and the orientation are not part of this calculation. Door-number traditions exist, and this page presents them above; here, the number remains a feel.

Choosing a home

Before signing a lease or a purchase agreement

The door number can serve as a question during a visit: what feel does this place favor, and does it match your current needs? The answer settles nothing. What matters first can be seen and measured on site: the light at different times of day, the noise from the street and neighbors, the daily commute, the full budget with utilities and fees, the size and layout, the neighborhood and nearby shops. The calculation comes afterward, as one light among others, which you may just as well leave aside.

Frequently asked questions about house number numerology

How do you calculate your house number in numerology?

Add the digits of the door number, then keep going until you get a single digit, except at 11, 22, and 33, which you keep. 12 gives 1 + 2 = 3; 104 gives 1 + 0 + 4 = 5; 29 gives 2 + 9 = 11. Only the number counts, not the street or the city.

How do you calculate it for an apartment?

Use the apartment number, not the building’s: it is the door you walk through every day. Apartment 12 in building 47 is therefore a house 3. The building’s number describes rather the feel of the building, which you can read separately.

How do you handle bis, ter, and letters in the number?

A bis (a French address suffix) counts as 2, a ter as 3, a quater as 4; a letter keeps its value (A = 1, B = 2…). For door 12 bis, you add 1 + 2 + 2, which makes 5, the same as for 12 B. With 47 ter, you get 4 + 7 + 3 = 14, a total you reduce further: 1 + 4 = 5.

Does the street name count in the calculation?

No, not here: the calculation uses only the door number. Some approaches also add up the letters of the street name, with the Pythagorean chart (A = 1, B = 2… I = 9, then J = 1), and draw from it a second number for the neighborhood or the building. Our method keeps a single number, the door’s, for a simple reading.

What if I have moved several times?

Each home has its number, and you can compare: in which one did you feel the most at ease, and why? The number describes the place, not you. It mainly serves to spot what the different houses brought out in you: calm, movement, hospitality, or work.

House 11, 22, or 33: what does this number mean, and how does it relate to the life path?

These three numbers read as demanding versions of 2, 4, and 6, and are often also lived in their reduced form. The life path, for its part, is not part of the calculation: it only shows whether the feel of the place extends your temperament or balances it out.

Which house numbers are said to be lucky or unlucky?

It all depends on the tradition you ask. In the Chinese world, 8 is sought after because its name recalls that of prosperity, and 4 avoided for the opposite reason. In the West, 13 inspires wariness, to the point that some floors or numbers disappear. The numerology on this site does not rank doors in this way: no number announces an event, each one only describes a feel.

Can you change your door number?

Some people add a letter, a “bis,” or a ½ on an interior plaque to get a different total; the practice is reported by numerology authors, mostly English-speaking, and no effect is promised here. An official address, for its part, cannot be changed at will: street numbering is up to the municipality. If the feel of the place does not suit you, the layout remains the simplest lever.
