Meaning of Cloister

Cloister speaks of the retreat you choose. The card evokes a place or a moment away from the noise, where you find yourself again: reading, a solitary walk, silence, writing. It values chosen solitude as a time of renewal and reflection.

In the Saturn series, which likes concentration, it reminds you that some answers do not come amid agitation. Stepping aside for a while lets you sort things out, measure what matters, and return to others more present.

Its downside is imposed isolation or flight. Reflection does good when it is decided and leaves the door open; it is not there to avoid what needs to be said.

Cloister in your life

In love

In a relationship, Cloister speaks of each person’s need to breathe: time alone that later nourishes the bond.

At work

At the office, the card invites you to protect a block of focus time: turn off notifications, set aside a file that needs calm.

Cloister in a reading

In its position

Cloister puts the question at a distance: a time of silence helps you see more clearly before deciding.

Saturn series

Long time: limits, trials, withdrawal, maturity.

Misfortune, Sterility, Fatality, Grace, Ruin, Delay

The Belline cards help you look at a situation from another angle: they predict nothing, and the choice remains yours.

Its place in the deck

Cloister carries number 52, the last of Saturn, which in ancient symbolism evokes concentration and silence. It closes a series that includes Misfortune, Sterility, Fatality, Grace, and Delay. Versana makes it a chosen retreat, a time to step back, never an imposed isolation.

Reflecting on Cloister

A question

What time of silence would you need to listen to your own opinion?

A gesture

Set aside a moment of silence, phone off, and note in a few lines what is said there.

Where the sources disagree

  • Names and spellings of the cards: Modernized spelling in the French names: Hasard (“Hazard” on the card), Grâce, Cloître. Three cards carry a double name, written with a hyphen: Pensée-Amitié, Campagne-Santé, Vol-Perte (other lists say Amitié, Santé, Perte). The English version uses the card names chosen for the English pages.
  • Tone of the cards: A ranking set by the site from the name of each card, with no old source: 21 supportive cards, 14 demanding, 18 neutral. It gives the tone of a reading, never an answer or a yes or no.
  • Dominant series: When one planet comes up more often than the others in a reading (at least two cards), its series colors the interpretation. A modern reading rule, described by several guides; cards outside the series are not part of the count.
  • Images of the cards: The drawings attributed to the mage Edmond (died 1881) are old, but the cards published since 1961 and the Mucem photographs are not under a free license. The site draws its own pictograms and reproduces no card.

Frequently asked questions about Cloister

What does Cloister mean in the Belline oracle?

Cloister means chosen retreat: a time of silence and reflection to see clearly. The card values chosen solitude, which prepares you to return to others more available.

Does Cloister advise isolating yourself?

No: it speaks of a pause that is decided and limited, and that leaves the bond open. Isolating yourself out of suffering is something else and deserves a conversation with loved ones.
