Meaning of the Stars

The Stars speak of light. On the card, they shine in the night and serve as a landmark: it is the image of hope and inspiration. The card underlines what gives direction, a clear idea, a conviction, an ideal that makes you want to move forward.

It is often read as a reminder: find your heading again. When doubt sets in, the Stars suggest turning toward what matters most to you and trusting it. They also evoke creativity, intuitions that arrive, and trust in a chosen direction.

Their reverse side is idealism without grounding: chasing a horizon that stays distant, or waiting for inspiration to do all the work. The card then asks you to connect the dream to a first concrete step.

The Stars in your life

In love

In a relationship, the Stars bring to light hope and admiration: a bond that inspires, shared projects that give a direction.

At work

On the professional front, the card speaks of vocation, clear ideas, and projects that regain a meaning or a direction to follow.

The Stars with another card

In first position

The Stars open the pair on a hope or a heading: the next card says what they light the way toward.

In second position

After another card, the Stars light it up: what the card before names gains meaning, clarity, or a direction.

In the Grand Tableau

The Stars’ house welcomes what inspires: what lands there describes the ideal, the hope, or the heading of the moment.

Lenormand describes a situation through images: it fixes no date and no outcome, and the decision stays with you.

What the history of the deck says

Sixteenth card of Hechtel’s deck (around 1799), the Stars come with a 6 of Hearts. Their value of hope and inspiration belongs to nineteenth-century divinatory use, built on the image of the heavenly body rather than on a founding text.

Where sources disagree

  • French names of the cards: One name per card, the most common in French: le Navire (or le Bateau), le Fouet (or les Verges, le Balai), les Oiseaux (or le Hibou), l’Étoile (or les Étoiles), les Chemins (or la Croisée des chemins), l’Anneau (or la Bague). The other names are given on the card’s page. In English, the names set by the site’s glossary.
  • Tone of the cards (favorable, neutral, demanding): The most widespread classification among modern authors, with no ancient source: eight supportive cards (Clover, Bouquet, Stars, Dog, Heart, Sun, Key, Anchor), nine demanding ones (Clouds, Snake, Coffin, Scythe, Whip, Fox, Mountain, Mice, Cross), nineteen neutral. It only sets the tone of a pair or a spread, never an answer.
  • Reversed cards: The Petit Lenormand is read without reversals: all cards come out upright and the meaning comes from the neighboring cards.
  • Images of the 1799 sheet: Hechtel’s work is in the public domain, but the only complete digitization found (British Museum) is distributed by the museum under a noncommercial license, while Commons shows it as public domain. Lacking a safe license for a commercial site, the site draws its own pictograms. To be reviewed on legal advice (article 14 of Directive 2019/790).
