Meaning of the Heart

The Heart speaks of what touches you. It stands for affection in all its forms: the love of a couple, friendship, family tenderness, but also the passion you put into a project or a commitment. It is one of the gentlest cards in the deck.

It also pushes you to act sincerely. What you do wholeheartedly finds an echo more easily; what you do reluctantly weighs more. The card also recalls generosity: a thoughtful gesture, a word of reconciliation, a helping hand.

Its downside is feeling that overflows, when emotion replaces judgment or generosity makes you forget your own needs.

The Heart in your life

In love

In a relationship, the Heart highlights shared, sincere feelings: a good moment to say what you feel.

At work

At work, the card speaks of drive and commitment: an assignment that excites you, a close-knit team, a career chosen out of passion.

The Heart with another card

In first position

The Heart opens the pair with feelings: the next card says how they show up and where they lead.

In second position

After another card, the Heart softens the one before it: it makes it affectionate, sincere, or done with pleasure.

In the Grand Tableau

The Heart’s house welcomes emotional life: the card that falls there describes the climate of feelings and close bonds.

Lenormand describes a situation through images: it fixes no date and no outcome, and the decision stays with you.

What the history of the deck says

In the 1799 deck, the Heart card carries the jack of Hearts in its medallion. Fortune-tellers of the 19th century made it the card of love and affection and, in the Grand Tableau, the card you look at for feelings. This role as a theme card is a modern reading convention, adopted by this site.

Where sources disagree

  • Tone of the cards (favorable, neutral, demanding): The most widespread classification among modern authors, with no ancient source: eight supportive cards (Clover, Bouquet, Stars, Dog, Heart, Sun, Key, Anchor), nine demanding ones (Clouds, Snake, Coffin, Scythe, Whip, Fox, Mountain, Mice, Cross), nineteen neutral. It only sets the tone of a pair or a spread, never an answer.
  • Reversed cards: The Petit Lenormand is read without reversals: all cards come out upright and the meaning comes from the neighboring cards.
  • Images of the 1799 sheet: Hechtel’s work is in the public domain, but the only complete digitization found (British Museum) is distributed by the museum under a noncommercial license, while Commons shows it as public domain. Lacking a safe license for a commercial site, the site draws its own pictograms. To be reviewed on legal advice (article 14 of Directive 2019/790).
