Meaning of the Dog

The Dog speaks of loyalty. On the card, the animal has long been humanity’s companion: faithful, attentive, present in simple moments as in hard ones. The card puts forward sincere friendship, support with no ulterior motive.

It is often read as a trusted person: a friend, a colleague, a loved one to count on. It can also point to you as the one who gives support. The Dog invites you to recognize these solid bonds and to look after them through concrete gestures.

Its reverse side is dependence or blind loyalty: staying out of habit, giving without receiving. The card then asks you to check that loyalty runs both ways.

The Dog in your life

In love

In a romantic bond, the Dog brings to light closeness and loyalty: a deep friendship that gives love a foundation.

At work

Professionally, the Dog evokes a supportive team, a reliable colleague, or a support to lean on in a project.

The Dog with another card

In first position

The Dog opens the pair on loyalty or friendship: the next card says to whom or to what it is addressed.

In second position

After another card, the Dog accompanies it: the card before is supported, loyal, or surrounded by trust.

In the Grand Tableau

The Dog’s house welcomes bonds of trust: the card placed there describes the friendship or support of the moment.

Lenormand describes a situation through images: it fixes no date and no outcome, and the decision stays with you.

What the history of the deck says

Hechtel’s deck, around 1799, numbers the Dog 18 and gives it a 10 of Hearts as its medallion. The loyalty attributed to it follows from the animal’s reputation, taken up by nineteenth-century card readers as a convention of reading.

Where sources disagree

  • Tone of the cards (favorable, neutral, demanding): The most widespread classification among modern authors, with no ancient source: eight supportive cards (Clover, Bouquet, Stars, Dog, Heart, Sun, Key, Anchor), nine demanding ones (Clouds, Snake, Coffin, Scythe, Whip, Fox, Mountain, Mice, Cross), nineteen neutral. It only sets the tone of a pair or a spread, never an answer.
  • Reversed cards: The Petit Lenormand is read without reversals: all cards come out upright and the meaning comes from the neighboring cards.
  • Images of the 1799 sheet: Hechtel’s work is in the public domain, but the only complete digitization found (British Museum) is distributed by the museum under a noncommercial license, while Commons shows it as public domain. Lacking a safe license for a commercial site, the site draws its own pictograms. To be reviewed on legal advice (article 14 of Directive 2019/790).
