Where the name Amanda comes from

Amanda is Latin, the feminine form of the gerundive amandus, “worthy of being loved”, from amare, “to love”.

It was invented as a given name by the playwright Colley Cibber, who used it for a heroine in a Restoration comedy, and the dramatist John Vanbrugh used it soon after. It entered ordinary use in the 18th century and has stayed in English ever since.
