The new moon in Aries in tradition
The Sun and Moon meet in Aries, the sign of drive and beginnings.
Tradition would see a new moon of clean starts: launching an undertaking, settling a hesitation, asserting yourself on a personal project. The downside would be haste, the urge to commit to everything before looking at what it demands, and the difficulty of holding on to an idea once the pleasure of novelty fades.
Almost every culture has made this moonless night a threshold. The Chinese calendar starts the month with it, as did the old Hebrew calendar; the Romans announced its arrival on the calends. Modern astrology draws a simple image from it: the buried seed, which has not yet shown anything. The new moon would then be the moment to put into words what you would like to see ripen over the month, to tidy up, to lay a first stone. The sign it occupies, the same as the Sun’s, would give this intention its color: material matters in Taurus, speech in Gemini, home in Cancer. Some people turn it into a writing ritual; others simply use it as a marker for taking stock. None of this rests on proof; it is a way of giving time a rhythm, which each person can keep or leave.

A reading of the sky to take as food for thought, not to be followed blindly: the dates are calculated, and what tradition associates with them is reported in the conditional, announcing nothing. Why?

The moment the Moon joins the Sun in longitude (0°), calculated to the second by the site’s engine.
What happens in the sky
A new moon is a conjunction: seen from Earth, the Moon joins the Sun in the same sign and at the same degree, give or take a few degrees of latitude. It rises and sets with the Sun, lost in its glare, and the half of its surface lit by the Sun stays turned toward space. So you cannot see it, unless it passes exactly in front of the solar disk, which causes an eclipse. The exact moment is that of the conjunction in longitude, given here to the minute in Paris time; the crescent only becomes visible the next day or the day after, in the evening glow, low in the west. Because the Moon’s path is not circular, the interval between two new moons varies by a few hours around twenty-nine and a half days, and sometimes two of them fall in the same calendar month.
