Where the name Mabel comes from

Mabel is a medieval shortening of Amabilis, a Roman cognomen meaning “lovable”, borne by a 5th-century priest of Riom in central France.

Mabel and Amabel were both common in England during the Middle Ages, then grew rare after the 15th century. The name came back in the 19th century, helped perhaps by Charlotte Mary Yonge’s novel The Heir of Redclyffe, which has minor characters called Mabel and Amabel.
