The 2nd decan of Sagittarius: the meaning

After Mercury, the Chaldean order points to the Moon for the middle of Sagittarius.

The triplicities, for their part, match this third with Aries, the fire of spring, and with Mars, which rules it. The star of dreams and emotions on one side, that of action and combat on the other: rarely have two readings of one decan been so far apart, while still sharing the taste for departure that belongs to the archer.

In the lunar version, a person of this decan would travel to feel: she lingers in a village, bonds with her hosts, brings back memories heavy with emotion rather than photos of monuments. Stories, legends, and music from elsewhere would touch her deeply. In the Martian version, the same person would choose the hard trek, the expedition, the humanitarian project in difficult terrain, and would find in physical effort a form of freedom.

Instability would lurk in both portraits. The first might change horizons with her mood, the way seasons change, and flee commitments as soon as they weigh; the second might take needless risks to prove something. The middle of Sagittarius would be advised to keep an anchor point, a place, a loved one, a regular activity, to leave from and return to. Adventure takes on its full meaning when someone is waiting for the story of the return, and the boldest person needs a harbor too.

The 2nd decan of Sagittarius: tradition

What tradition says

Neither the Moon nor Mars finds a Ptolemaic dignity in Sagittarius; both are received there by Jupiter, master of the archer, which tradition judges rather benevolent.

How is it calculated?

The faces give Moon; the triplicities give Aries and its ruler, Mars.

Frequently asked questions about the 2nd decan of Sagittarius

The Moon or Mars: who rules the 2nd decan of Sagittarius?

For the Chaldean school, the Moon, which comes after the Mercury of the first third. For the school of the triplicities, Mars, by way of Aries, which this third recalls. The two readings hardly resemble each other, one dreamy, the other conquering, but both describe a Sagittarius who needs somewhere else in order to feel alive.

Are there other decan systems besides the faces and the triplicities?

Yes. Manilius assigned the decans to signs, by a different rule; the Egyptian lists gave them names and deities of their own; some medieval authors blended several traditions. The site keeps the two systems most used today, faces and triplicities, without claiming that they exhaust the question.

Does the 2nd decan of Sagittarius like risk?

If you keep Mars, the manuals attribute to it a marked taste for adventure and challenge. If you keep the Moon, travel would be more a matter of sensitivity and encounters. This taste for risk remains a symbolic tendency; Mars, the Moon, and the rising sign, as they stand at birth, say more about a person’s relationship to danger.
