The 1st decan of Sagittarius: the meaning

Mercury comes first in Sagittarius because the Chaldean series, after the Venus at the end of Scorpio, passes to it.

The triplicities, true to their principle, give the archer’s opening to Jupiter, its master. The messenger and the great benefic share a taste for knowledge, but one wants it precise and quick, the other vast and full of meaning. These first ten degrees of Sagittarius would swing between these two ways of aiming far.

With Mercury, one would describe a person who speaks three languages, devours travel guides, plans an itinerary by comparing train timetables, and likes to test ideas over long dinners. With Jupiter, she would more likely set off without planning everything, confident, drawn to the big questions, philosophy, teaching, the world’s religious traditions. Both versions share a refusal of the blocked horizon, and a frankness that is often disarming.

Mercury would push toward flitting about, starting three courses without finishing one; Jupiter, toward believing one holds the truth and lecturing at the table. Astrologers would advise this entry into Sagittarius to finish what it starts, and to leave others the right to think differently. Curiosity remains its finest quality as long as it comes with listening, and the richest journey often begins with a question put to someone very different.

The 1st decan of Sagittarius: tradition

What tradition says

Mercury is in detriment in Sagittarius, the sign opposite its Gemini: as a face, it would hold a modest place in a sign that cuts against its taste for detail.

How is it calculated?

The faces give Mercury; the triplicities give Sagittarius itself and its ruler, Jupiter.

Frequently asked questions about the 1st decan of Sagittarius

Why does Mercury open Sagittarius for the Chaldeans?

Because the series of faces follows a fixed order, from the slowest star to the fastest, with no regard for the signs. Venus having received the last third of Scorpio, the first third of Sagittarius falls to Mercury. The triplicities, for their part, give Jupiter, master of the archer: two rulers separated by an opposition of domiciles.

Is the 1st decan of Sagittarius more intellectual?

In the reading of the faces, yes: Mercury would steer Sagittarius’s appetite for discovery toward study, languages, and discussion. With Jupiter, the triplicity ruler, it would be more about confidence and the search for meaning. To know which of the two nuances dominates, the actual placement of these two planets in the birth chart is more informative.

When does the Sun travel through the 1st decan of Sagittarius?

Just after it enters Sagittarius, at the end of November, and for about ten days into the first days of December. These limits shift a little from one autumn to the next. The table of dates gives the exact moments for three years, and the calculator finds the decan of any past birth, time included.
