What tradition says
Mercury has no dignity of its own in Taurus apart from this face.
Venus, on the contrary, is at home here: depending on the school, the decan would combine a passing ruler and a domiciled one. Medieval authors associated Mercury with trade and accounts, Venus with fabrics and adornments; the decan would thus unite the merchant and the artisan of luxury.
The decans are said to come from Egypt, where 36 groups of stars were used to tell the hour at night. Their lists appear on Middle Kingdom coffin lids, in the form of tables. The Greeks of Alexandria are then said to have attached these divisions to the signs of the zodiac and given them planets.
