Saturn square Neptune: the meaning

Between November 2015 and September 2016, Saturn in Sagittarius formed three exact squares with Neptune in Pisces.

The previous one, a waxing square, went back to 1998–1999, between Saturn in Taurus and Neptune at the start of Aquarius. These periods leave their mark on a whole generation; for a child born in 2016, what matters is the house involved and any contact with their intimate planets. On its own, this square describes an era torn between disenchantment and a thirst for meaning.

If it touches a personal planet, this square would set two attitudes against each other: the clear-sightedness that sees the limits and the dream that wants to go beyond them. The person goes through disillusions that shape them. They may feel betrayed by ideals, institutions, and people they believed in. Yet these falls teach them to tell the dreams that hold from those that collapse, to recognize empty promises, and to build carefully what truly matters to them.

The possible downside would be discouragement: giving up believing for fear of being let down, or, on the contrary, escaping into the imaginary when life weighs too heavily. They may also doubt their own abilities for a long time, as if every success were a misunderstanding. Concrete supports, a modest but sustained project, and people around them who encourage them turn this tension into clear-sighted perseverance, and let them keep their capacity for wonder.

Saturn square Neptune in your life

In love

They may go through romantic disappointments that make them cautious, even wary.

They waver between the desire for an ideal love and the fear of being let down. Shared by the children of 2016, this square does not weigh on their relationships. In synastry, a Saturn that crosses at 90° the Neptune of a spouse born twenty years later would describe a bond where one person’s realism shakes the other’s dreams, to be balanced with tenderness and patience.

At work

This square feeds a valuable clear-sightedness in careers where ideals have to be confronted with reality: managing social projects, journalism, auditing, care work, cultural institutions.

The person quickly spots what does not hold up. They may also lose heart at the slowness or the compromises. Keeping a goal within their means, and celebrating each step completed, helps them last.

In daily life

Some days the momentum drops and doubt sets in about the usefulness of their efforts.

They need both structure and escape: schedules and landmarks, but also films, music, long walks. A regular rhythm, an activity that feeds the imagination, and two or three loyal friends to confide their discouragement to help them get through the gray periods. Noting one thing accomplished each evening reminds them that they are moving forward.

Saturn square Neptune: nuances and tradition

What tradition says

Lacking Neptune, the ancients wrote nothing about this square, whose first commentaries date from the 1900s.

How is it calculated?

Tradition calls it dynamic: the two functions are said to pull against each other and call for an adjustment, without foretelling anything.

Frequently asked questions about Saturn square Neptune

What does Saturn square Neptune mean in a birth chart?

Reality and ideal collide in it: formative disillusions, doubt, but also clear-sightedness and perseverance. Children born in 2016 almost all share it; for any one of them, it matters if it meets a luminary or an angle. Concrete supports and an encouraging circle turn this tension into quiet strength.

When did this square form recently?

Between November 2015 and September 2016, three times, with Saturn in Sagittarius and Neptune in Pisces. The previous one dated from 1998–1999, between Taurus and Aquarius. This square comes around twice per cycle of about thirty-six years, and the next is expected in the early 2040s.

Does this square make you pessimistic?

It is credited with a sensitivity to disillusion and a doubt that can slow things down. It is not a sentence to pessimism: many people with this configuration develop a tender clear-sightedness that keeps the capacity to believe while knowing how to check. They often become valuable advisers for anyone who doubts their dreams.
