What does the letter I mean?
This number gives the letter breadth and detachment.
I is the ninth letter of the alphabet and equals 9, the last of the single digits: the one that closes a series and already looks beyond it. Because it is a vowel, I weighs on what happens inside, on the impulses we do not always show. As for expression, the emotional is its territory: it communicates through feeling, gaze, and welcome more than through argument or demonstration.
Its shape is the most economical in the alphabet: one vertical stroke, one dot above. Nothing that catches, nothing that curls. The stroke links ground to sky, and the dot recalls the eye or the drop. The sound is made with the mouth almost closed, on the tip of the lips, like a small cry of recognition. In some languages it is also the letter that stands for “I,” alone, capitalized, isolated: a paradox for a letter of the 9, which is precisely trying to move beyond the individual.
