The essentials

Spider at a glance

For you, it invites you to pick up a project or a bond you had set aside, one thread after another, without hurrying.

A question to ask yourself

Which thread of your life deserves to be picked up again, a little each day?

Something to watch

A web is woven slowly: do not look in it for an immediate answer, or a reason to worry.

What this sign evokes

The spider frightens many people, and yet fascinates: it builds its web out of nothing, mends it every morning, then waits. This patience, this precision, have fed readings in which it stands for the art of creating, connecting, building at one’s own pace. Meeting one in the house is above all an invitation to look more closely.

This reading does not ask you to like spiders. It simply proposes that you ask yourself what you are weaving right now: an idea, a relationship, a long-term piece of work. The creature working without a sound can remind you that beautiful things are built in small touches.

What cultures say about it

In Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Arachne, a weaver, challenges Minerva, the Roman counterpart of the Greek goddess Athena. Defeated or punished, she is changed into a spider and weaves forever. The myth makes the spider the image of the craftswoman who never stops.

What attention can do

A spider is noticed mostly when it startles you, in the hollow of a corner or on a wall: fear sharpens the eye, and then you see them everywhere.

Frequency illusion and confirmation bias

Depending on the situation

In the house
A spider in the house is readily read as the urge to finish a piece of work begun. It is mostly looking for a quiet corner and prey: a glass and a sheet of paper are enough to carry it back outside.
Morning spider
The saying about morning, noon, and evening is told with a laugh, not believed. It comes from an observation of the weather, not from a message: keep mostly its rhythm and its little rhyme.

One small stepChoose a project you set aside and move it forward by a few minutes, then note what changed.

Spider: your questions

What does a spider in the house mean?

It is said to encourage patience, or the resumption of a creation left unfinished. The animal settles mostly where insects and quiet abound. Keep the idea that crossed your mind on seeing it, because the encounter is worth that much.

What does the French saying about the morning spider mean?

The French saying “spider in the morning, sorrow; spider at noon, worry; spider in the evening, hope” is said to date from the 17th century as a weather forecast: a spider seen early in the morning meant rain. It is repeated today for its rhyme, with no conclusion drawn from it.

Why is Anansi the spider famous?

Among the Akan of Ghana, Anansi is the cunning hero of tales: one story tells how he obtained from the sky god Nyame all the stories, called ever since “spider stories”.
