The essentials

Bee at a glance

For you, it invites you to consider what you are building with others, and to give your part all the care it deserves.

A question to ask yourself

What shared project do you contribute to, and do you have enough sweetness left to do it?

Something to watch

A bee coming close is first looking for flowers: do not look for a message in what remains foraging.

What this sign evokes

The bee lives in a colony, works tirelessly, and turns flower nectar into honey. This model of cooperation has inspired, in many cultures, the idea of a society where everyone has a place. Watching it circle the garden evokes useful effort, community, and the sweetness that results.

If it caught your eye, it may invite you to look at where your energy goes: what you do alone, what you do with others, what nourishes you. Nothing in its visit promises anything; it reminds you that steady work, even quiet work, eventually yields something good.

What cultures say about it

A text from ancient Egypt has the bee born from the tears of the god Ra falling on the earth. The entomologist Gene Kritsky drew from it the title of his history of Egyptian beekeeping, The Tears of Re, published in 2015.

What attention can do

A bee is noticed in a flowering garden; if you think about it, you will see more of them, without there necessarily being more.

Frequency illusion and confirmation bias

Depending on the situation

In the house
A bee that has come into the house is sometimes read as a reminder of work to finish. It has mostly lost its way: open a window wide, and it will find the light again by itself.
It circles you
A bee circling you is often read as an invitation to calm and gentleness. It is drawn by a scent or a bright color: do not wave it off, it will leave.

One small stepThink of a task you carry out with others, thank one person for it, then note what you said to them.

Bee: your questions

What does it mean when a bee comes into the house?

It is read as a reminder of shared work, or a call to gentleness. The insect mostly comes in by mistake, drawn by a scent or by the light. Open a window and let it out, then write what was on your mind: the personal reading happens there.

What does “telling the bees” mean?

In England, the custom held that births, marriages, and departures from the house were announced to the hives, along with the family’s sorrows. It was recorded in Lincolnshire in the mid-19th century. It regarded the bees as members of the household.

Why did Napoleon have bees on his mantle?

At the coronation of 1804, his mantle is strewn with golden bees. They echo the golden “bees” found in 1653 at Tournai in the tomb of the Frankish king Childeric, which were in fact cicadas. The emblem thus linked the Empire to a very old story of France.
