Which part of your life is changing shape these days?

What this sign evokes
The butterfly fascinates because it changes its body without changing its being: the caterpillar, the chrysalis, and the winged insect are one and the same animal. That is why so many readings make it an image of transformation, and sometimes of the soul itself, light and free. Seeing one land near you is often taken as an invitation to look at what is transforming in your life.
Its visit is brief, and that is part of what it says: the beauty of a moment that does not last. Many people who have just lost a loved one say they noticed one at that very time; this very common reading does not need to be proven to console.
What cultures say about it
In ancient Greek, a single word, psychê, meant the breath of life, the soul, and the butterfly. Aristotle uses it for the insect that emerges from the caterpillar. The Greeks already saw in this passage from one form to another an image of what in us remains through change.

A butterfly entering the room was said to signal a visit from the most beloved person.

For Mazahua and Purépecha communities, these swarms are said to be the souls of the dead visiting their families: a reading in which the butterfly links the living with those who came before them.

The more you think about the butterfly, the more you notice it: once it has struck you, you spot it more often, and that is normal.
Depending on the situation
- It lands on you
- A butterfly that lands on your hand or shoulder is often read as a mark of trust, or as a moment of peace to enjoy. It is mostly seeking the warmth and salt of your skin.
- It comes into the house
- In the beliefs Hearn reports, it would signal a visit; today, many read a piece of news on its way. Open the window for it: it is looking for the light outside.
- A moth
- The moth, drawn to the lamp, is often read as the pull of what shines, or as an intuition that comes in the evening. The Greeks gave it the same name as the daytime butterfly.

Butterfly: your questions
What does a butterfly circling you mean?
Spiritual readings see an invitation to lightness, or a sign that a transformation is under way. A butterfly is also drawn to what is warm, colorful, or fragrant. What speaks most clearly is still your thought at the time: write it down, because it gives the encounter its meaning.
Is a butterfly a sign from a loved one who has died?
Many people experience it that way, and several cultures thought so before us: ancient Greece with the word psychê, Japan as described by Lafcadio Hearn, the communities of Michoacán at the Día de Muertos. Versana reports it as it is, without ruling on it: if it comforts you, it has already done its work.
