Dreaming of a spider: meaning and symbolism

Dreaming about a spider points to patience and woven threads: a creation taking shape, or a trap you distrust.

  • Patience
  • Creation
  • Grip

What this dream brings up for you

  1. Do spiders scare you, fascinate you, or leave you indifferent?
  2. Did you see the spider, its web, or both?
  3. Which matter in your days feels like a thread whose end you cannot find?

What it can mean

The spider weaves in silence, waits, and takes. In a dream, it often symbolizes two opposite images: patient, creative work, or a grip and a trap. It also awakens an old, widespread fear of what is small, fast, and unpredictable, and whose approach you can never foresee.

Look at the web and your place in it. A spider weaving speaks of a project being built; a spider advancing on you, of a worry drawing near; a web that holds you, of a feeling of being gripped or bogged down. Your relationship to the spider, phobia or fascination, shades everything.

Depending on what happens

The web can speak of patient work or of a trap: it all depends on your place, spectator of the work or caught in it. What holds you back or connects you?

Feeling the spider on you speaks of a worry that has come close: a concern that truly touches you, more than you show.

The tarantula magnifies the effect: a massive fear, often tied to something that looks huge and hairy up close. It invites you to name what impresses you.

An oversized spider stands for a stake that crushes you: a task, a bond, a fear that has taken up too much room.

Depending on what you felt

Fear of the spider is very common; in the dream, it often points to a specific stake whose hold you dread.

Sadness before an empty or damaged web can speak of a project fraying, or a bond worn down by time.

Crushing the spider in anger shows a wish to free yourself from a hold, a dependency, or a resentment.

Admiring the web or the spider at work speaks of pride in a piece of work moving along slowly.

A spider watched calmly suggests you are taming an old fear.

If this dream comes back

If the spider returns, note whether it weaves or advances, and what held you back the day before: the grip or the creation quickly comes into focus.

Write it in my journal

A dream is read as a mirror of what you are living, never as an omen: no reading here predicts anything at all.

Read according to Freud, Jung, and research

For Freud, the spider has no imposed meaning: it is read through what it evokes for you, a phobia, a memory, a figure who envelops or controls. Your associations show what the image hides.

Dreaming of a spider: your questions

What does it mean to dream of a spider following me?

A following spider stages a worry drawing near: a concern kept at a distance, a stake that insists. The pursuit prepares nothing real. Note your reaction, and whether the spider stared at you or went around you.

Is dreaming of a spider a bad omen?

This dream is no prediction. Artemidorus compared the venomous spider to malevolent people; in Ibn Sirin, one reads a malicious woman, a weak and treacherous man, but also a weaver or an ascetic: old readings that contradict each other.

Do children dream of spiders more often?

According to Van de Castle, the spider is among the creatures (with snakes, monsters, big cats, and insects) that made up 34% of the animals dreamed between ages 4 and 16, but only 17% among college students. The image gives a body to fears that are poorly put into words at that age.
