The 1st decan of Gemini: the meaning

The two rulers of this decan are almost opposites.

Jupiter, who picks the series of faces back up after Saturn, sees wide: big questions, knowledge, travel. Mercury, ruler of Gemini in the triplicity system, sees fast: news, exchanges, details. Tradition draws from them two variants of the same curiosity, one encyclopedic, the other journalistic, which meet in the pleasure of understanding and helping others understand.

On the Jupiter side, one would describe a person who signs up for a language course, goes from lecture to lecture, and brings back a stack of books and a notebook full of notes from every trip. On the Mercury side, a person who knows before anyone else who is moving, which restaurant is opening, and why the meeting was moved. Both share a definite verbal ease and a constant need for mental movement; boredom would be their worst enemy.

The shared downside would be scattering. Jupiter would push toward excess enthusiasm and too many projects; Mercury, toward constant channel-surfing that prevents digging deeper. Choosing a single subject each season to study in depth, and carrying it through to a concrete result, would let this decan turn its curiosity into real knowledge. An article written, a course finished, a talk given: tangible proofs that it sometimes lacks.

The 1st decan of Gemini: tradition

What tradition says

Jupiter is in detriment in Gemini, the sign opposite its Sagittarius: as a face, it would hold a minor dignity there in a sign that works against it.

How is it calculated?

The faces give Jupiter; the triplicities give Gemini itself and its ruler, Mercury.

Frequently asked questions about the 1st decan of Gemini

What are the dates of the 1st decan of Gemini?

This third opens when the Sun enters Gemini, in the second half of May, and closes about ten days later. Each spring, its boundaries slide a little. The page’s engine calculates them to the minute for this year and the next two; for a past birthday, the sign tool finds the Sun’s exact degree.

Which planet rules the 1st decan of Gemini?

Jupiter by the Chaldean faces, which pick up the start of their series here. Mercury by the triplicities, which give the opening slice to the ruler of the sign. Both answers are legitimate; they come from different traditions, Hellenistic and medieval for the first, Indian and modern for the second.

Why is Jupiter in detriment in Gemini?

Because Gemini faces Sagittarius, the sign Jupiter rules. Astrologers judge that a body placed opposite its own home acts against the grain. Here, Jupiter nonetheless holds the face of the first decan: the wide vision it symbolizes would have to come to terms with a sign inclined to detail, speed, and variety.
