Dreaming of a cat: meaning and symbolism
Dreaming of a cat speaks of independence and intuition: a part of you that wants its freedom, or a presence you are wary of.

Dreaming of a cat at a glance
For you, this dream raises the question of trust: in your own intuitions, and in a close person who remains elusive.
Whom or what do you trust right now, and where do you stay on your guard?
A dream black cat does not bring bad luck: the superstition comes from folklore, not from the dream.
Case by case
- A cat that scratches or bites
- The scratch speaks of wariness or a wound: someone, or a part of you, is defending itself.
- A lost or found cat
- Looking for a cat often means looking for a bit of freedom or lightness that you have set aside; finding it means taking it back.
- Feeling: fear
- Fearing the dream cat often points to wariness toward a close person or toward your own intuition.
- Feeling: sadness
- A cat that moves away and saddens you can speak of a relationship that is taking its distance.
- Feeling: anger
- Chasing a cat away in anger sometimes shows exasperation with someone who does as they please.
What this dream brings up for you
- Do you like cats, or do they make you uneasy?
- Did the cat come toward you, or keep its distance?
- Does it remind you of a real animal or of someone around you?
What it can mean
The cat lives near us without ever quite belonging to us: it chooses its cuddles, disappears, returns. In a dream, it often stands for that independent part of yourself that wants to keep its freedom, or else a close person whose intentions are hard to guess. It is also associated with intuition, that way of sensing things before understanding them.
The meaning depends a great deal on your relationship with cats. An affectionate cat speaks of gentleness and regained trust; a cat that scratches, of wariness or a wound in a relationship; a lost cat, of a part of you that you have somewhat forgotten.
Depending on what happens
The black cat awakens superstition, but in a dream it speaks mainly of the unknown: a situation or a person that you cannot yet read.
The scratch speaks of wariness or a wound: someone, or a part of you, is defending itself. Ask yourself in which relationship you stay on the defensive.
The kitten speaks of fragility and tenderness: a budding project, a need to be protected, or the wish to take care of someone.
Looking for a cat often means looking for a bit of freedom or lightness that you have set aside; finding it means taking it back.
Depending on what you felt
Fearing the dream cat often points to wariness toward a close person or toward your own intuition.
A cat that moves away and saddens you can speak of a relationship that is taking its distance.
Chasing a cat away in anger sometimes shows exasperation with someone who does as they please.
A cat that comes to snuggle against you speaks of gentleness received and trust regained.
A quiet cat, sleeping or watching, invites you to trust your own pace and your own feelings.
If this dream comes back
A cat that often returns in your dreams deserves to be noted along with its attitude: its behavior from one night to the next often tells the evolution of a relationship.
One small stepNote what the cat was doing and the first person it makes you think of.
A dream is read as a mirror of what you are living, never as an omen: no reading here predicts anything at all.
Read according to Freud, Jung, and research
For Freud, no image has a fixed meaning: the dream cat is read from what it evokes for the person, a beloved animal, a figure from childhood, a desire. The dream would fulfill a wish, often disguised.

To amplify it is to look for everything it reminds you of.

Is a black cat in a dream a sign of bad luck?
No. The black cat’s reputation comes from old superstitions, and other cultures see it instead as a good-luck charm. In a dream, it speaks mainly of the unknown or of wariness: a situation you cannot yet read. No dream foresees misfortune.
What does it mean to dream of a cat attacking you?
A cat that scratches or bites often stands for a tension in a relationship: someone is defending themselves, or a remark landed further than intended. It can also show a part of you that reacts sharply. Think back over the exchanges of the last few days to see what may have stung you.
Is dreaming of cats linked to intuition?
The cat is often associated with intuition, because it seems to sense things before we do. The dream may invite you to listen to your impressions, without taking them for certainties: write them down, then check them against reality before deciding.
