Who is the archangel Zadkiel?
Zadkiel, also spelled Tzadkiel, is absent from the biblical texts. He comes from Jewish mysticism and Christian Kabbalah, which associate him with Jupiter and with Chesed, the sefirah of kindness. He is also called Hasdiel, “God is my kindness.”
Some texts make him the angel, anonymous in Genesis, who stops Abraham’s hand at the moment of Isaac’s sacrifice; others give this role to Michael, or see God himself in it. From this comes his image as angel of mercy, very present in modern angelology.

The name

How the archangel is depicted
Sometimes shown with a knife in hand, in memory of the scene of Isaac.
Good to know
- Absent from the Bible.
His role in the story of Isaac is a late reading: Genesis does not name the angel who stops Abraham.
Archangel Zadkiel: your questions
Is Zadkiel in the Bible?
No. His name comes from Jewish mysticism and Christian Kabbalah. Genesis does tell that an angel stops Abraham at the moment of Isaac’s sacrifice, but without naming him; the identification with Zadkiel is a later reading, among others.
What does the name Zadkiel mean?
“God is my justice.” His other name, Hasdiel, means “God is my kindness”: the tradition thus brings together in him justice and mercy, which explains his role as archangel of forgiveness in modern angelology.
Why is Zadkiel associated with Jupiter?
Christian Kabbalah places each archangel beside a sefirah and a planet: Zadkiel is linked there to Chesed, kindness, and to Jupiter. These correspondences are esoteric constructions, reported here as such.
And what about your own angels?
Zadkiel tempers justice. Your date also points to angels among Lenain’s: which are they?
