Cleansing your home with salt: the ritual explained

Salt is used to mark a threshold and a fresh start: no flame, a bowl set down, swept up, then thrown away, with no promise about waves.

Salt at a glance

Salt says “here, we close a page” with a gesture without flame; it holds no proven “wave,” and it is housework that cleans.

What the gesture brings

A ritual with no smoke or flame, so no fire risk, within everyone’s reach.

Something to watch

A bowl of salt removes nothing from the air; when cleaning with white vinegar, never put bleach in the mix.

What the gesture means

In many popular traditions, salt guards thresholds: a little is slipped under the door of a new home, a bowl is set in a corner. Modern practitioners credit it with the ability to “absorb” bad energies, which no one has ever been able to observe.

What remains is a rite of passage, plain and odorless: a few precise gestures, an everyday material, a moment that separates before from after. That is reason enough to choose it.

Fresh air first

A bowl of salt holds back neither the humidity of a leak nor the pollutants in the room. For a healthier home, the official advice remains to open wide, twice a day, for at least ten minutes. The bowl of salt comes afterward, as a sign of a fresh start.

The ritual, step by step

  1. Ventilate and tidyOpen the windows, take out useless objects, run a broom over the floor: the ritual rests on a room that is already clean.
  2. Set salt in the cornersA small bowl of coarse gray salt in each corner of a room, or a single bowl in the center, depending on the custom you follow.
  3. Mark the thresholdA thin line of salt in front of the front door, or a bowl next to the doormat: the threshold marks the limit of home.
  4. Wait a day or a nightTraditions vary: from a few hours to a whole night. Choose a short duration and stick to it.
  5. Sweep up and throw awayPour the salt into a bag, throw it in the trash or outside, wash the bowls: the ritual ends with this concrete gesture.

Salt and white vinegar

To really clean, white vinegar diluted in water works for windows, floors, and limescale, and a pinch of coarse salt helps with scrubbing. Never mix bleach with white vinegar or with any other acid: according to ANSES (the French health and safety agency, April 2023), the mixture releases chlorine, a toxic gas. Rinse between products and ventilate; after an accidental mix, a poison control center tells you what to do.

Where the gesture comes from

Salt has been a symbol of preservation for a very long time: it protects food, it seals alliances, it appears in many tales and popular customs of Europe. A pinch was thrown over the shoulder, or poured at the threshold of a new house.

The idea that it “absorbs waves” is much more recent. It circulates in the wellness world and in geobiology with no old source and no measurement, which places it among the reported beliefs.

A symbolic ritual: it replaces neither airing out, nor a repair, nor a professional’s advice.

Salt: your questions

How long should you leave the salt?

Customs range from a few hours to a night. Nothing sets a right duration: pick one, note the time you set it down, and sweep up the salt when it is over so that the ritual keeps a beginning and an end.

Which salt should you use?

Coarse gray salt or sea salt is enough, with no additives. Salts sold especially for the ritual have no demonstrated superiority. What counts for the tradition is the simplicity of the gesture, not the price.

What do you do with the salt afterward?

Sweep it into a bag and throw it in the trash or outside, and wash the bowls with clear water. Do not reuse it in the kitchen: it served for a ritual, and this closing gesture ends the moment.

Salt and white vinegar: how?

Separately. Diluted white vinegar washes surfaces, coarse salt helps with scrubbing. Never mix it with bleach: ANSES points out that this releases chlorine, a toxic gas. Rinse, ventilate, and use one product at a time.
